CONTENT: post-mission stuff: training/sparring, space lessons, drawing, attempts at cooking, all the while pretending he hasn't been shot

INFIRMARY ➢ CLOSED to Erik

[ Adrenaline has been fueling his body for a while now, having allowed him to power through the gunshot wound he took to his shoulder during the heist. It's not looking too bad either, but he definitely lost some blood, and the area around the injury is swollen and aching. He's also looking a little paler than usual, which at this point is to be expected.

He's making a good job of acting as though it doesn't bother him much, though. Behind pressed lips, he grits his teeth while he gets the wound cleaned and bandaged, while he's told that he needs to wait for a little longer before anyone can stitch it up properly, or heal it altogether. He doesn't complain, just nods in agreement, then leans back on the bed, preparing himself to wait for a while until anyone can check his injury. ]

WORK OUT THE STRESS ➢ OPEN

[ Working out is quite possibly not the brightest idea he's had so far, but also: it's been almost a week now, and Jim is absolutely done with sitting around taking it easy. His shoulder is still sore, but at this point he doesn't really care anymore. He can power through it, he's dealt with much worse than this.

So he's made it to the training room, where he's going through a few individual training exercises. He might be doing something more active like HITT training or boxing moves, or other times he'll be going through various yoga positions, which help him with the soreness on his shoulder. On occasion he will be likely looking like he's struggling, but good luck having him admit to that. ]

SPACE LESSONS ➢ OPEN

[ Now back on the station, Jim plans to resume the classes he's offered to anyone who wants to learn more about space. He's contacted anyone who's shown interest, has invited everyone to spread the word if anyone else wants to show up, and he's also put together some reading material on basics of space, how it divides into galaxies and solar systems, how orbits work, what kinds of astronomical objects there are. With questions about how people don't "fall off planets", he has also included a bit of information about gravity, and he's now at the mess hall at an arranged time, with a few books and tablets where he and whoever shows up can go through some information. ]

KITCHEN NIGHTMARE ➢ OPEN

[ So, Jim technically doesn't know how to cook. That said, he's been trying to learn. Mostly on his own, relying on recipes he finds and tips and tricks he's learned from reading, but he's quickly realizing that putting theory to practice is pretty tricky when it comes to cooking.

At least he hasn't set fire to the kitchen yet, but he may be struggling a little between something frying, some batter he's got that looks somewhat overbeat, or just cursing while he tries to disperse a small cloud of smoke that emerges when he opens the oven door. ]

Damn it...

HERE COMES THE SUN ➢ OPEN

[ The sunlight room is another place Jim enjoys visiting, during this downtime. He has with him a sketchbook and some drawing supplies, and finding a quiet spot to sit, he entertains himself sketching various things. Whether the scenery he has here, or other things from memory, like his ship; on occasion he may be even trying to draw simple portraits of people he knows, both from home and from the station. He's pretty immersed in it, but he will welcome any company, and he's quick to offer a small smile when approached. ]

Huh. I know how that is - that was me as well, not too long ago.

Baking is a bit of a more precise art than most foods, though. [ His tone is always very serious (when not yelling and shrieking) by default, but he naturally shifts into a more commander-esque one as he continues. He's a serious man on a serious resource rescue mission now. ] You can be a little more flexible with how much or little you put into something. But a cake? Doing that can completely ruin it!

The batter looks a little watery, but that can be saved by adding a little more flour into it. I'd say a tablespoon's worth.

[ Jim arches an eyebrow, looking fairly amused. He's familiar with that tone, alright. ]

Yes, sir, [ He shoots back, his tone mildly teasing, smile wide on his face as he takes a tablespoon and scoops up the flower, adding it to the batter. Then he takes his spatula and starts folding it in. ]

I don't think whatever was in that oven can be saved, though.

But, it looks like most of the rest of this can. And there's enough left over that we won't need to add much.

[ After noting that tone ... familiar, since he's used to this specific type of teasing where he doesn't get bristly about it, Yzak moves to start collecting anything else they might need - which isn't much, Jim's already got most of it out already.

He does ask though, curiously: ]

Are you making this for any specific reason?

[ He's just being a little shit, really. Captain should outrank Commander anyway, not that Jim gives a shit about his rank here. There's no Starfleet, so it doesn't have the same weight. ]

That's too bad. I hate wasting food, especially given our situation.

[ But if he can use the batter he still has, it's better than nothing. Not much he can do about the rest. ]

Oh, it was just... a surprise for someone. [ He shrugs, smiling. ] Guess I should've gone with something easier.

I do, too. Thankfully it doesn't look like much was wasted, but.

[ He shrugs. ]

A surprise? For who? Is it some sort of birthday-related thing?

[ He's taking a peek through the different sized pans they have stocked. ]

[ Jim lifts an eyebrow slightly. Amused, mostly. That's quite the third degree, but it's not like he minds answering, so. ]

It's for Finn. And no, not birthday-related or anything. I just wanted to try something nice.

[ What better way to make conversation than to be nosy? Which happens to be one of Yzak's specialties. ]

Something nice?

[ It's not a foreign concept and he doesn't sound like he thinks it is. Still, baking a whole ass cake for someone is still very nice. Nobody ever baked him a cake out of nowhere out of the kindness of their heart. Rude tbh! ]

Well, that's ... admirable to do, if it's just to do something nice and not some sort of special occasion.

[ Luckily Jim's not the kind to necessarily mind people being nosy. He'll just share until he no longer wants to, at which point he'll change the subject himself. But this isn't a subject he minds being honest about, so. ]

Well, he taught me how to make pancakes. It was fun. And he had a tough time during this last mission, I just wanted to do something for him that'd make him smile.

[ Not that Jim has a hard time managing that, even without cake, but. You know. ]

He did. But I'm glad he's doing better now, now that it's all behind us.

And, this'll definitely help, too.

[ Is it all behind us? A question that keeps plaguing Jim's mind. But yes, Yzak's right; it's over for now, at least, and Finn's doing much better. ]

I hope so. [ He smiles. ] Okay, so what do I do with the batter now?

[ He leans over to take a look at it and its consistency. And just for good measure, to make sure everything else was properly mixed in so it bakes like it's supposed to. ]

That looks a lot better. Good.

Now we put it into a pan and let it bake while we get the rest of what we need ready.

Here, I'm not sure how big you actually want to make it if it's for one person. But keep in mind it'll rise a bit while baking.

That's fine. I think we'll just leave it here for others to help themselves. It's better than throwing the leftover batter down the drain, I think.

[ Still, he'll make sure not to overfill the pan, he knows that much. Anyway, he fetches a cake pan from one of the cupboards, then some baking paper. He did line the bottom on the other one as he read in the cooking instructions, so he grabs some scissors and gets to cutting a neat circle that fits the bottom of the pan. ]
