[OPEN MINGLE] Movie Night, time to cry over pikachu.
CHARACTERS: Everyone!
LOCATION: The Mess Hall on the Ximilia
DATE: A day or so after the mission end.
CONTENT: Another post-mission movie night. Shocking, I know.
WARNINGS: None! Feel free to add warnings to any top levels or threads that need them.
Ah, yes. Another day, another questionable movie night. Or something like that.
Between getting weepy about leaving behind his beloved Cubits (as we all do, crying over our faux Pokémon seems like the hip thing to do-), Newt collects notes and prepares for another one of those silly little movie nights; he's started getting way too used to expecting them as part of his role or job or whatever. It's just. Y'know. Muscle memory, practically. He shifts through questionnaires and updates the birthday list, and prepares.

The Mess Hall is dressed up for the occasion as usual! With some added flair. Actually, the first thing that might instantly draw someone's eyes is the HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign accompanied by a few presents and some very, very distinct cakes. Wait, whose birthday was it recently? You'll have to check the birthday poster on the wall, silly. In this instance — Vash, Yzak, Hibiki, and Yujin are getting a little celebration here. Whenever they decide to arrive (which Newt will be more than happy to enforce, though he's pretty sure that won't be necessary), the candles get lit and the typical birthday song is sang by anyone who may know it.
Maybe he should make birthdays a common part of movie nights...
There's a little space to leave presents; don't worry, he'll give everyone but the four birthday kids a heads up that they're celebrating! Plenty of cake to go around, too — can you tell which one belongs to which person?

There is also a rack of mysterious clothes in the corner.
Turns out, they're all pajamas. Feel free to find some to lounge around in.
We deserve a little comfort, right?

And of course, movies are a must. Today offers two Sherlock Movies — an old live action, but also The Great Mouse Detective, which is a treat and a half (happy birthday, Yujin). They've also got Footloose (happy not-birthday, Peter), and... Pokémon the First Movie, the last being for some delayed lessons in alternate universe Cubits. Newt will be more than happy to explain that these are his world's versions of the creatures they'd all come to love. In fact, some of the Pokémon have features of Cubits, don't they?
Weird!

It starts with Pikachu's Vacation, don't worry.
The sad Pikachu meme can show up later.
Accompanying this Pokémon-themed area is an assortment of board games, all centered around Cubits instead of Pokemon. Thanks to the lovely Miss Clarke, they have some enjoyable card games and board games from Ankata to enjoy, so that you can always remember the strange, strange trainer culture and all the critters that partake in it.
Food, though! Food's important. The usual drinks are available, but it also looks like Newt had taken some of those questionnaire answers to heart. Big pots of posole and Chinese daikon and carrot stew sit beside sukiyaki. Main courses, set alongside little birthday goodie bags with an assortment of candy that people had written down as their favorites. Again, Newt's silly school activity form is one hell of a tool to collect data.

Among the candies are: plum candy, botan rice candy, Gear Shifts, starbursts, sour candies (yellow balls), candied bofa fruit, bonbons, yuzushu hard candy, Swedish fish, lollipops, and chocolates.
Hopefully it's enough to feel refreshed; their next mission really isn't that far off, is it?
Best get some R&R wherever you can.

Leave Some Presents Here For Vash, Hibiki, Yzak, or Yujin
For Yzak
for Yujin
She ties that with repurposed string from the kitchens, with a little note: Happy birthday, Yujin! Signed with "Ciri." )
For All Four!
A small catalogue of different assorted Sherlock Holmes movies, along with a portable DVD player with its own little screen — hey, there's a DVD already in there... Perfect for watching shows while lounging in bed! With this, a very snazzy nice hat that is (with great restraint) not a Sherlock-styled detective hat.
For Vash:
A pair of cactus-themed slippers. Absolutely. But also, a collection of very spiffy tinted glasses! Gotta have extra pairs in case you break yours, right?
For Yzak:
A very important keychain, of course! While it's not quite a charm, Newt figures it's close enough, right? And to add to it, a sampler collection of different teas, perfect for the violin-themed mug that's also in the gift bag.
For Hibiki:
Ah, but what is a singer without a bit of cheesy music-themed jewelry? But don't think he's forgotten what you said about kaiju movies! He has to fight everything within him to not keep this Mothra plush as his own. Just know how much he suffered for you on your birthday.
ota for one of the August birthday nerds
... how depressing.
BUT THIS AIN'T ABOUT THAT. (unless someone wants to make it about that because I'm here for it) This is about the here and the now and Newton's expected yet still never less absolutely somehow endearing contributions to their downtime. Yzak has long given in to the fact that he'll always end up at these movie nights, so he hardly needs to be convinced or pulled into them anymore. (but he'll still act like he was) And anyone who knows Yzak at all knows that beneath the cranky, serious business exterior, he's all soft, so he actually does like these events. Seeing his teammates relaxing, taking some time out to rest and tend to themselves, important things he knows a team should do, being responsible for his own back home.
Yzak wasn't expecting, however, the birthday sign, the cakes, the very specific cake that could be for nobody else but him. And the gifts ... those haven't been so common here on this day. He'd usually get a couple of things from some closer friends, but never was it this much. So there's a look of (warm at the edges) surprise at the gesture.
And truly, Yzak can't complain. He's a Leo, after all! He loves the attention, he loves being remembered and celebrated (because it means he isn't being forgotten or left behind). So he's more than open to anybody coming to say hello to one of the birthday boys, whether it's during the more birthday focused celebrations or while they're watching one of the movies. Though movie-wise he seems more into the Sherlock movie than the others, so his attention can be caught a lot easier during the other three if one wishes to have his full attention or wants to pull him away somewhere. ]

What birthday does it make this?
( Lips curling up into a smile, shoulders dipping down: seeing everyone arrive back has been an incredible relief of stress she'd been ignoring, pretending it was totally normal to be one of the lingering shadows on Ximilia while everyone else toiled away in uncertain danger. )

When Jake plops in front of Yujin now, it's in his comfortably familiar (yet now also unfamiliar) fuzzy one. There is zero awkwardness or lingering tension, because honestly? They're both way too old for it. Especially Yujin, which is exactly the sort of humor he should expect more of tonight. ]
Well, well, well. If it isn't the old man himself. [ Jake leans forward, passing a casual glance over the colorful artwork. ] What is this, some sorta jigsaw puzzle for retirees?

ok but what's the koi-koi equivalent to the shadow realm, I need to know
The explanation sounds easy enough, and with a finger curled at her lips, the blonde nods. ]
So kinda like seven rummy? Or poker?
[ Just don't make her bet anything, she has a horrible track record. ]
1 point kasu jail probably,,,
we can handwave game play if you want!
B
And here I say koi-koi to continue, yes?
b
( Asked, very conversationally, as she idly regards her eight cards. Her eyebrows quirk up when she looks up and over at him: not so much confidence in her ability to play this match game well, but certainly amusement because in her experience, all games end up devolving into some kind of betting, innocuous and otherwise. )
B
However.
He’s drawn in by the games in spite of himself. It’s been awhile since he played anything. Even longer since he played something that didn’t end in violence and death. And he knows koi-koi, even if he’s a little rusty. It doesn’t matter. Borderland honed at game playing skills to a fine point and he knows it will come back to him.
He pops a rice candy in his mouth and drops into the chair across from Yujin.]
I know how to play.
[There's a casual confidence to his demeanor that suggests he not only knows how to play but expects he’ll be good at winning.]
b
I know this game.
Vaguely, anyway. I don't think I've given it more than a couple of tries. But my best friend's got a set.

Is it just her, or does he seem a little wound up? Sure, they haven't interacted much--maybe once or twice while on mission--but is it just her, or does he seem a bit uncomfortable? Her grin dialed back a few degrees, Hibiki offers a cup filled with soda to him. Here, have a drink. ]
Yeah! Feels kinda weird celebrating like this, though. I'm not used to people making a big deal out of my birthday. It's a lot, huh?
[ A beat, as she shifts topics slightly. ]
So, what day's yours?
(no subject)
i
[ Spoken with no edge and the way Yzak himself is looking around at the others - those who are taking a moment out for him, Newton - it's obvious that he's touched. ]
There's usually not so much of a birthday tilt to these things, but leave it to Newton to change things up.

sean diaz is new enough that i'm gonna use his name, but also tattoos and brownies
Sean was glad to be on this crew. Grateful, even. The opportunity to go back and fix the single worst thing to ever happen to his family... he'd endure an entire lifetime without them, if it meant his Dad could be alive and Daniel would have a normal childhood. Even so, the process of integrating back brought Sean back to the high school room -- a place he'd been so recently, yet felt so far away from him now. Weird.
The people here still largely strangers, but nice ones. There was even a large vat of posole that made him smile, even if the taste wasn't exactly how his Dad made it. He seeks out the party host and gives the overeager man an awkward thumbs up in reply to his enthusiastic pointing. See? He could be nice, too. ]

SEAN'S SHITTY TATTOO CORNER
I just bought it in Ankata. Pretty cool, right? [ He smiles, if he notices you staring. ] I knew a girl who used to do these for everyone she met. She gave me mine, see?
[ He displays for you a truly unique tattoo, still in the process of healing. ]
I brought my stuff if you wanna try it? I'm still learning, though, so like... say yes at your own risk.
(( OOC: Comment below if your character would sit for Sean and be tattoo'd! A few caveats to consider before taking this dangerous plunge:
1) Sean is a very gifted artist, but he is also very new at tattooing.
2) No finding images on google. I will be drawing the design your character asks for in a way that reflects Sean's style and relative skill level. For an idea of what it might look like, take a peak at Sean's own tattoo.
3) It will literally be tattoo'd on them and if they hate it, they're gonna have to get it covered somehow. These tattoos will be no larger than a quarter, but still. This is what we call RP Stakes, people.
Feel free to thread out your character discussing what they want with Sean or simply reply with a description of what your character would ask for. If you feel like being extra spicy, go ahead and simply comment with SURPRISE ME in the subject line and Sean will ICly draw something that your character makes him think of. Live mas, everybody. ]

ciri | bringing the knucklebones | ota
Which she supposes they could be used, if one ran out of rounder things to slingshot. What she really wants is what she ends up with: a set of knucklebones, and clear space at one of the tables away from the films that play, lips quirking up into a grin. )
Every played knucklebones before?
( She tosses the seven bones up, not too far, just enough to get some air, and catches them again in the palm of her hand - not starting a game, but making obvious what one uses for it. )
Give it a try!

Shuntaro Chishiya | Alice in Borderland
It’s been a long fucking time since he had sukiyaki, okay. Or at least it feels that way. Between Borderland and the Ximilia Chishiya's sense of time is pretty messed up.
So he does, in fact, wander into movie night, but pointedly ignores the movie that’s playing. There are a pair of earbuds resting in his ears attached to an old second-hand iPod he found at the most recent supply drop. It came pre-loaded with a truly absurd amount 90s and 00s Western pop music, which may not be his favorite in general but is still, at the moment, preferable to listening to Pikachu pikachuing.
Currently, he can be found sitting at the back of the room, nursing a drink, eating a bowl of sukiyaki and blasting Britney Spears' "Toxic" into his ears at full volume.
Feel free to bother him.]
