CHARACTERS: moiraine damodred + you LOCATION: the labs, the medical bay, the canteen DATE: post-mission CONTENT: recuperates, figures out futuristic life, etc WARNINGS: tbd
( she'd told mccoy that she'd rest when they were back on the station, though she'd never specified exactly how long she would rest for. and whilst there was still some part of her that wished for more sleep, that ever-tired part that never got its rest, she wouldn't sit around whilst there were others injured or recovering.
she couldn't sit around. and as strange as it was the medical area was perhaps the most familiar, something moiraine could feel useful in by fetching something or offering some light healing.
which she did, asking either healer or patient if there was anything that she could do for them )
( Moiraine's offer comes near the end of his day, as he's packing it in and has no plans to return until tomorrow. McCoy puts his hands on his hips, his mouth quirked. )
Yes, you can lie down and get some rest, either here or in your own quarters.
( the looks that she's used to giving to lan to tell him that she's fine, even if not perfectly rested don't work on leonard. it's not that same well-trusted relationship that she's used to with her warder. and even when moiraine isn't exhausted from over-channeling she's never completely rested -- there's never time for that in her crazy mission.
but none of that exists here, there is time to rest after the mission they've just completed. except she doesn't know how to use that time. or this station. being active in the one thing she knows is the only thing she can comfortably do )
( He's heard it over and over again from so many who aren't well, who push past their limits and don't know their own value that he's simply skeptical. b>)
Now's the time to rest, Moiraine, even if you don't think you need it. Take a break and get out of the infirmary. Everything that's needed doing is done.
( she sighs, head dipping slightly. because for as stubborn as she is he also is. and when there isn't anything pressing to do like she's used to it's harder to fight such care.
care she isn't used to from many )
And do what?
( rest. but she doesn't think she could sleep and here with nothing to read or relax with... she's a little lost )
( he may not have the recovery needs that she does but he worked just as hard as her, he probably slept as little. and still does now. she knows the look even if she doesn't often question it )
Most here are healed and you're not the only healer.
( she'd wandered here accidentally, though realistically she'd been wandering, had found this place, and just had no idea what it was.
some of it made sense, the jars of unknown liquids or items that she might find in a healer's room or perhaps even of her brown sisters, though the boxes of things that people had so far only described to her before as 'technology' was lost on her.
it didn't stop her from looking, curiosity amongst her confusion, carefully lifting something out to look at it.
maybe it beeps, maybe you know what it is and don't want it looked at-- but otherwise she's turning it over in her hands, looking for a mechanism or something obvious about it )
Are you alright? [ A voice that was warm, deep, and slightly accented in a way that might be construed as familiar for its British cadence came from behind as the lab doors slid open.
Drift hadn't come to the labs very often, but he had noticed someone going in with a certain wayward curiosity that he found himself drawn in to investigate. ]
[ Days like this one seem to have their way for The Doctor to go about on his own, tinkering with gadgets. An itchy finger and over a thousand years keeping the TARDIS in working condition will do that to a time lord. He took a step out of his little work corner to complain about one of the other scientistsβ gadgetry, something about it not being βflashyβ enough and so on.
He re-enters the lab with hands in his pockets and boredom weighing on his mind. To see someone else holding one of his tools is enough for him to pause. ]
( judging by the sounds of it moiraine's very glad that she didn't just drop it.
she doesn't panic though, keeping her hands steady as she slowly replaces it back to where she'd found it, calm in her voice even if a part of it may seem to scold )
Something like that shouldn't be left alone. Or exist.
[ what a shock, andy is in the sunlight room. perhaps the more unusual thing is she isn't sleeping. she woke up from a particularly annoying dream and was bristling enough to grab her axe. ]
[ the trees aren't really real, so she doesn't feel as bad swinging it into them as she might have normally back home. climate change is infuriating, save the trees, don't cut them down unnecessarily! ]
[ her labrys is an extension of her arm. she swings seamlessly, cutting hard into the tree without stagger, without stumble. she spins it around and just slices through the air, frowning as she works more to get the tension out of the shoulders rather than any need to actually practice. ]
( it's easy for moiraine to forget that the sunlight room isn't really real, that the trees and flowers she admires for their beauty are some illusion.
she's been here a few times, seen many people walking through and enjoying their time though it's the first time she's seen someone training here. it shouldn't surprise her, certainly not after the mission they've recently come from, but really the surprise is masking something else: reminiscence. a feeling of home, of watching someone else she knows very well train )
How long have you worked with it?
( she waits until the woman's finished a swing before asking, not wanting to cause any of her own surprise )
[ being able to forget it's all technically an illusion - it's one of andy's favorite parts. the technology is wild to her, but she can appreciate the sun on her face, fake or otherwise. ]
[ she isn't entirely surprised by the question, idly aware of the other woman meandering around nearby. she does haul it up over her shoulder, if only to signify she's done spinning around for the moment. ]
[ she wrinkles her nose, trying to remember what she tells most people, but honestly the answer has probably been different every time. ] Too long. I was a kid when I started.
( there's a fond smile on her though some loneliness behind it. when you've had someone by your side for twenty years you feel their absence keenly, especially in moiraine's bond with lan )
He uses a sword but in the same stroke, he is the sword. As you are your weapon.
[ she half smiles. it's nice to be compared to her axe. it's a good axe, and she treasures it deeply. though the shape has been altered many times, it's been with her longer than any one person. ]
I'm taking that as a compliment. [ truly flattered. ] Did he start young too?
[ despite the shift in this woman's face, andy's expression remains a little gentle. she can't understand life threatening the same way, but she does feel for that sort of camaraderie born of danger. ]
Swords are useful that way. [ half a joke. ] What about you? Are you like him that way?
No. I was never trained, nor asked him to train me.
( moiraine could have over the years but with her channelling and his sword there never was a reason. and most chose not to threaten them with how imposing he could be on look alone )
I expect my need of him would be different if I were.
You don't have to have the same abilities to be a good team.
[ not that she can't do... nearly all the things her boys can do, but there's a reason they all have their areas, their expertise, why nicky tends to play sniper and andy takes the lead. ]
But I'm sure you know that already too, with whatever you can do on your end.
The past twenty years would have been very different otherwise.
( if her and plan hadn't been a good team, if they'd been unable to get along or work on their mission. she'd told him everything before truly knowing him but the feeling she'd had about him had been enough for her and had turned out correct )
[ objectively, she knows that's true, however much twenty years is a drop in the bucket for her years. besides, she speaks of him so fondly, it's easy to tell the companionship is there. ]
( and as guilty as she felt about dragging him on her quest, about his life only being lived as hers did and nothing else, moiraine wouldn't wish for anyone else by her side, for however long it was )
Sounds like it's the kind that will, if you want it to.
[ she has her family born of a shared gift (or curse), but they have their clashes, and fixing it involves work. it's all just made them all the more closer. ]
And you? What's your name? [ she likes to think when there are people she doesn't recognize it's because they are in fact new, not because her memory is shit. ]
That was a tough one. [ and it explains why she missed so many new faces, when half of them had gone to "heaven." ]
They all come with different dangers. I've been here for all but the first one, and none of them have ever been what I'd call easy. Hopefully you're good at blending in, as that tends to be a big part of them too.
The ease of fitting in varies on location. [ she did great in the wild west! hell was harder simply because she refused to believe any of it was real, in an afterlife sense. ]
[ she snorts. ] Yeah, you'll get used to that too. There's always bad shit lying under the surface somewhere.
βΊ THE MEDICAL BAY
she couldn't sit around. and as strange as it was the medical area was perhaps the most familiar, something moiraine could feel useful in by fetching something or offering some light healing.

( rest. but she doesn't think she could sleep and here with nothing to read or relax with... she's a little lost )
I prefer being busy.
no subject
( McCoy scoops up his datapad and a book of poetry he'd left behind some weeks ago, glancing at the lot before tucking it under his arm. )
Take a nap?

I was seeing if I could figure any of these out.

Iβd drop that if I were you.
no subject
perhaps it is, she doesn't know.
she keeps it in her hands though doesn't move, stops touching at it further )
What is it?
no subject
[ That tiny thing? A thermonuclear generator? Surely, itβs a wonder. Part of him wanted to make it smaller. But alasβ¦ ]
With the wrong push of a button, both your hands and your entire body will burn to a crisp.
[ Extra emphasis on the βpβ at the end. ]

[ presumably. ]
no subject
( though few also seem to have any reason to train with a weapon, to train at all )
You have a lot of skill.
no subject
I do. [ she doesn't see a need to deny it, nor does she think to say thanks. ]
no subject
( there's a fond smile on her though some loneliness behind it. when you've had someone by your side for twenty years you feel their absence keenly, especially in moiraine's bond with lan )

I'm taking that as a compliment. [ truly flattered. ] Did he start young too?
no subject
( some of her brightness fades a little, for lan he was put in a difficult position even before he was born )
I owe my life to him many times.
no subject
Swords are useful that way. [ half a joke. ] What about you? Are you like him that way?

His name is Lan.

And you? What's your name? [ she likes to think when there are people she doesn't recognize it's because they are in fact new, not because her memory is shit. ]
no subject
( a nod, a greeting that goes with her name )
And yours?
no subject
Welcome aboard. [ a beat. ] I'm assuming you haven't been here long, but I do miss things sometimes.
no subject
( and she'd been pulled into that very quickly )
I don't think I'd expected the risk and danger with them.

Everything that I initially believed or expected on that mission became something else.
