Kaidan wasn't expecting the blow to be that hard. He took a step back when it landed, reassessed, and circled around before the next exchange of blows. Kaidan was paying attention both to Majima's story and the way he was fighting. Yeah, he could pick up that this was a touchy subject. But if James and Shepard's fight was any indication, sometimes a sparring match was the best way to talk through these sorts of things.
