OPEN | we are gathered here to celebrate the birth of one steven harrington
CHARACTERS: Finn Mertens & Steve Harrington & YOU
LOCATION: Simulation Room
DATE: March 6th, two hours before the mission announcement interrupts the festivities
CONTENT: Finn throws Steve a several months belated surprise birthday part, and the whole crew, new and old are invited.
WARNINGS: none so far!

the place;
[ Here they were. Three months late, sure, but worth the wait as most good things were. Steve Harrington, twenty years old, birthday-secret-keeper, couldn’t outrun the truth forever. Time had finally caught up with him. Birthday time.
With the help of several crew members imaginations and memories, they’ve created an authentic (if not perfectly period accurate) simulacrum of an early 1980s arcade. It's not dissimilar from an arcade you might find in small town America. Say... Indiana. From the faux wood paneling on the bar counter, to the neon accent lighting (no LEDs here, baby), to the carpet that simply didn’t know how to shut up, this simulation room was dripping with a certain something that might even feel homey to a number of the orbers. To the rest, it’s pure carnival spectacle; a glimpse into a piece of Earth some of them may have no experience with. ]
the games;
[ The main attraction, of course, is the arcade cabinets encircling much of the room. Familiar classics abound; your Pac-mans, your Q*berts, your Marios, your BurgerTimes and Trons. There were some solidly anachronistic inclusions as well, by way of Street Fighter, Crazy Taxi, Mortal Combat, and the effervescent Time Crisis II.
The simulation would pull up almost any game you could think of, regardless of time or universe, the only caveat the necessity of a quarter to play (for that authentic arcade experience). Luckily, it is a simulation, so the quarters are infinite! Astute patrons will notice that rather than any contemporary American figurehead, the silver coins instead depict one Steve Harrington in relief. ]
the grub;
[ Beyond the gaming cabinets, there’s a “bar” with centrally located seating. It serves simulated alcohol and bar food, mostly for vibes. Separately, there is a card table laden with very real snacks (also vaguely-but-not-quite period appropriate) and all the TaB and Jolt Cola you can drink. The piece de resistance at the center of the table is a decidedly homemade looking funfetti cake topped with twenty unlit candles.
A real spread for the ages. Too bad they’ll never make it to that cake. ]
the surprise;
[ Shortly after your arrival, the lights will dim and the call to hide will sound out over the crowd. Maybe you know this “Steve”, maybe you’ve never met the guy, maybe the custom of jumping out and screaming ‘SURPRISE’ at an unsuspecting birthday-haver is a completely new and frightening to you. Either way, you’re expected to do it, so get behind that barstool and be quiet.
Hopefully you'll find someone hiding with you to pass the time with in the dark. You could be crouched there for a while while waiting for Steve to make his way over. ]
the festivities;
[ Whether you’re here to genuinely celebrate our local Steve’s big foray into his twenties, or you’re brand new and just don’t know what else you’re supposed to be doing, or you’re just a filthy people-watcher who likes to crash parties... All are welcome!
Play games, mingle, forget about those little Incidents on the network and make some new friends. Everyone looks hot in the flattering glow of halogenic lighting, don’t be shy. ]
the record scratch;
[ The festivities are in full swing when someone -- probably Finn -- announces that it's time to light the candles for the birthday boy. As the attending crew comes together to wish Steve a hearty and happy belated birthday, a message hits across all their earpieces at once.
A mission dossier. One they have twenty minutes to prepare for.
Happy Birthday, Steve!! ]

1. like a (not that stealthy) ninja
The mercenary was still wearing his armor--hadn't taken it off for days now since the new arrivals showed up--but he'd taken his helmet off for the sake of levity at the party. At the time of the picture he'd been smiling, rooting for the person playing the game and their high score, the perfect vision of carefree. His armor looked garish in the neon light of the arcade and it probably made his face look ghoulish with his pale complexion, but the genuine expression was probably worth the poor lighting if Steve had timed it right.
He smiled at Steve as he watched the device work.]
Hey, birthday boy. [He up-tilted his chin to indicate the camera.] What's that?
no subject
So when he hears Felix's voice, he turns towards the mercenary and his smile just widens into a grin. He likes Felix's company. He's not sure what it is about him, but he knows that he's happy that Felix came to celebrate with everyone else, and really the reasoning probably doesn't matter so long as he's happy, right? ]
Hey, you! [ Ah yes, there's the good old Steve Harrington charm at work. ] This here is a camera. It takes pictures, but unlike regular film where you have to wait for it to be developed with all those chemicals it prints it right away, you just have to wait a few minutes for it to fully develop. [ And without giving him any warning, Steve raises the camera so that he can peek through the viewfinder, trying to snap a quick candid shot of Felix before he can pose, or ruin it. ]
no subject
Right, right. What did they call those? They're antiques from Earth where I'm from. No one uses them anymore except maybe for nostalgia or gimmicks.
[As he spoke, Felix didn't have the wherewithal to notice the camera being aimed and snapped at him. Probably for the best as at least half of his amused look was still in place rather than one of surprise or distrust or a rude pose with a sly smirk. He blinked after the flash and grimaced.]
Wait, that- [His quick reflexes found themselves finally and Felix lunged at Steve with his hands going for the camera and its traitorous piece of paper being printed.] Give it to me.
[He said with a laugh as he grappled lightly, playfully with the birthday boy.]
