[OPEN] Movie night, and again, movie night!

CHARACTERS: Everyone! Mingle!
LOCATION: The Mess Hall
DATE: After the mission, somewhere in the tail-end of November.
CONTENT: A movie night! Typical business, enjoy relaxing.
WARNINGS: None! But feel free to add them if you need to, to your threads.

This isn't much of a 'Thanksgiving' celebration. In fact, the only thing that really seems to constitute 'thanksgiving' is the pie and wine that is available — everything else, not so much. This month, the mess hall is arranged with the usual sort of system: a table for food and drinks, a table for Activities (tm), and a comfortable, blanket and pillow-fueled space where movies are projected on a sheet — because what better way to watch a movie than to rig up someone's old sheets?

The options for food had been, once again, stolen from the old 'survey' Newt had posted months beforehand, so some of you may find your favorite foods here. Firstly, and most importantly, there are pies. Pies of many assortments, as far as the ol' eye can see (exaggerations may apply). Alongside it, a mishmash of cultures — szechuan-themed noodles, onion gratin soup, black beans and rice... though most oddly, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

What? Someone had them on their favorite foods list. Sometimes we love a good outcast.

The other desert of choice to top off the night: white chocolate. Yzak's favorite, of course, and served in a few ways.

But drinks! Drinks are important, too, and you tea-lovers are in for a treat: a section solely dedicated to tea leaves. That's right, a Tea Bar, with all the mixtures to steep to your heart's content! Jasmine tea, seiros tea, your basic sweet teas and even more casual green teas — it's all here, served right next to the wine and champagne, in case you feel like getting a little — as the kid's these days don't say anymore — turnt.

Also yes, the glowy weird 'please only cybertronians consume this' Energon is there as well.

The activities this time are less involved, mostly because they come from boxes that merely have to be opened up to be enjoyed. A stack straight out of Walmart's kid science section, just for the crew of the Ximilia to enjoy. If you're thinking 'wow, this has Newton written all over it', you'd be very correct: geode breaking kits, fossil digging kits, rocket and gundam-building kits — you name it, it's there, straight from his childhood years and into your hearts.

The best selection is, obviously, the kit that makes gummy candy bugs.

Mmmm. Bug-shaped food.

And per usual, movie options are selected, and play in the following order through the night: Moana, Lord of the Rings (the first movie only, sorry, we're cutting you off at movie one), and Honey I Shrunk the Kids!

... And, when the night is at its end, another movie is snuck on when people are falling asleep or scattering to their rooms:

Oh dear.

Happy holidays, or something!

[His first "movie night" on the station. It reminds him more than it should have of the Lost Light and the movie marathons Rewind would hold that he rarely participated in. But half of the crew was missing for some time and this did seem like a suitable way to observe them.

The activities set out are the most curious, as "simulated excavation of earth-based minerals" was a fascinating game. Yes, he's nine-feet tall, yes his hands are unquestionable large for this, but do not think he's not going to plant himself on the floor and take his precious, meticulous time finding all these tiny "birthstones."

The kits for building miniature...Cybertronians? Oh, it says "suit" doesn't it. He frowns at the box.]

If we build these suits, are their small enough to use them?

[All of the films are questionable, but the one about a human shrinking his children attracts his attention the most. And not for good reasons. He can't help but analyze and scrutinize the science on display and how utterly impossible it is.]

Did anyone truly think that a machine built like that would work as intended?

[ Yzak is usually a pill when it comes to these cheery bonding events - needing to be pulled along or reluctantly striding in - and in the end it's always easy to see that he truly appreciates and enjoys things like this deep down.

But as of late, it would be difficult to pick up on on those easy signs that he's just being a cranky little tsundere man. And that's because his actual desire to partake in and enjoy these things has shrunk quite a bit. Or more accurately, has been forcibly crushed down as much as he can manage. It's hard for him to really see the point in bothering harder than he has to if everything he'll wish to hold on to here will be gone at the end of this (because the one thing he wanted to hold on to is gone. blue is gone and his arm is gone and half of his life is gone in both sense of the word...); be it physically, from his memory, or both. And even if he was optimistic to a point once (always to a point, because even at his most hopeful Yzak doesn't allow himself to go overboard with it) that he could change that, did to an extent, even if he's Yzak Jule so doesn't actually completely give up despite that, right now? He ain't feeling it.

So when he goes to the mess hall to just get a snack, he doesn't look very interested with this whole set-up.

Until he sees the white chocolate. And the tea. That much he can indulge in. (especially the white chocolate, fuck yeah)

He pops a piece of a white chocolate brownie into his mouth as he looks over the flavors available at the tea bar, making a low humming sound to himself. After a couple of beats, he swallows, and then mutters. ]

[Dante has gotten away from the audience watching Moana to sneak a couple slices of strawberry pie. He looks fine, although his shirt looks a bit singed—nothing he can't patch up, given time, but movie night called to him and he wasn't gonna turn down the invite like a heathen. And the he notices Yzak, and waves a small hello.]

You tried the strawberry pie yet? I don't know where they got it from but this is incredible.

[ Yzak turns and - ah. Dante, who sure did some shit at the tail end of that last mission. He'll circle back around to ask about that shortly.

For now, he tips his head some, eyes falling on the pie in question that still has enough to get a few slices out of. ]
I haven't, yet. But strawberry isn't usually my immediate go-to.

...

Maybe in a bit. [ He gives a small shrug of his shoulder. ] I'm not keen on going overboard with stuff like this.

Movies

[Sabriel is fascinated by the Fellowship of the Ring. Traveling to try to dispose of a dangerous magical artifact sounds... rather like what they're doing right now.]

So... if Gandalf can summon those eagles, why can't he do it again? Even if they can't get all the way to Mordor, they could at least get closer. Over the mountain at least, without so much of a fight.

[All the magic wasn't explained exactly, but she's not going to object to that.]

And why can't they just fight Sauron, or seal him away?

Gundam-building

[Yzak is practically her brother, and Sabriel recognizes that figure on the box. So of course she's going to get to work assembling it, carefully snipping out bits of plastic and fitting them together, like a little puzzle in three dimensions.]

I wonder what other things from people's worlds there are models of?

[It's soothing, fussing with all the little fiddly bits, letting them snap together and form, in bits and pieces, a little model in between sips of tea and consulting the directions.]

Damn shame. You’re missing out on the best pie you’ll ever taste in your life.

[He’s not biased at all, what are you talking about. Anyway. He bites down on his slice, chews, then swallows.]

I’d think this is the best time to go overboard with stuff like this. You just survived being near an active volcano, that calls for a party.
coordination: ((shrek has never been stuffed))

I think I'll save the heavy partying for when we retrieve the final orb. [ For a beat he looks like he wants to say more - it's not like he'll remember it after the fact either way - but he decides against it. The Major in him knows better than to hurt morale of a team. ]

But I've been around just as dangerous environments. So I'm just glad our luck has been holding out.

Anyway, that was quite the show you put on back there. What was that?

[Returning to the station, the Soldier had stood quietly on the teleportation platform as the team had regrouped. Had waited patiently for his next set of orders. Usually, returning from a mission would involve a debrief. A check over by the medics, and then being put back in to cryostasis. But none of that had come. No guards to drag him off. No doctors to clear him for freezing. Even the red-haired woman- (Machine? She isn't...human?) -offering up suggested actions hadn't been enough to force him in to motion.

Instead, it'd been long after the team had gone their own ways, long after he'd been left standing on the platform alone, that he'd finally risked leaving the room. That he'd made his way through the corridors of the station in the serach for a handler. For a medic. For someone who'd tell him what he was meant to do next. But his search had ultimately led him towards the voices of the rest of the team, just in time for Newt's party to already be in full swing.

As hungry as he might be, the food is left untouched. The drinks are left torturously out of reach as he instead ends up claiming a corner of the room. Ends up standing there in silence, even as the movies begin to play. But while the first movie is met with stonefaced lack of interest, there's a clear change in his demeanor as the second starts to play. As the somehow familiar opening notes of music draw his attention, and the Soldier's whole body seems to slowly untense. As he blinks up at the sight of the Rings being shared out. As one passes from Isildur, to Gollum, to Bilbo..

It's at the first sign of the Shire, as the camera pans over the familiar greenery, that the Soldier starts to shiver. That his breaths come out a little more shuddery than before. And that, after a few slightly wet blinks, Bucky is left standing in his place. Left staring up at the sight of a movie that's far too intricately linked to Sam Wilson for him to stay there much longer.

Which is why he ends up turning tail and storming out the room. Doesn't offer much of an apology for either the noise he makes or those he may bump in to along the way. Instead, he just wants to get out of there, and fast. Wants to put some distance between himself and the crew before he reacts further. Not that he gets all that far before he's slamming his fist into the nearest wall. Before he's twisting round to use that same wall as a support as he slides to the floor. And just sits there, staring down at the blood still coating his limbs in the aftermath of the mission they'd only just come back from.]

Did I smell pie?

[For his part at least. Ed is keen on the pie. If nostalgic for it. That it is an ache in reminding him of home. Of Winry. Of his farewell to her saying to keep one ready for their return for Al to try some. So he does at least hang around enjoying some of the food on offer, as he idly watches the films. While he is more of a scientist it is not that he doesn't enjoy fantasy, and this is obviously told as such with Moana and Lord of the Rings. He is curious about the ocean, given Amestris is landlocked and all, he hasn't really had the chance to experience it back home.

So he will sit and enjoy those while stuffing his face. Maybe occasionally unnerved the way Maui can transform, given the immediate and instinctive comparisons to Envy.

Maybe he might take a break at some point and try the fossil digging. It does seem the sort of thing he might have been interested in if not for alchemy, back home when he was younger. He can just imagine sitting with Al doing something like this together.]

And how far off do you think that's gonna be? [Munch munch.] Makes no sense to hold off on the celebration until the final step, if you know it'll take a long-ass time to get there. The little victories count, too.

[He says, but it's really just an excuse to score pizza and strawberry-flavored foods for Dante. As for the show, he just casually shrugs.]

Oh, that. My old man was a demon, so I got some demonic powers from him. And a couple of swords, too. [He says it so flippantly, it's clear there's a much longer, much darker story underneath it.] I will say, though, I don't usually finish quite so early. [A little flash of a smile, as if to tip off that he snuck that double entendre in on purpose.]

'Cause otherwise there wouldn't be a movie. Or at least it'd be a really boring one.

[Dante returns from his sojourn to the buffet table to take a spare seat next to Sabriel, his plate bearing two slices of strawberry pie. Whoever's suggestion this was, he's gonna kiss them full on the lips for this feast. This is the best strawberry pie he's had in years.]

As for Sauron, kinda hard to seal away a giant eyeball at the top of a tower. I think that's what he is. [A beat.] Unless I'm confusing him for the guy in white, they've got pretty similar names.

[ Thanksgiving is kind of a sore subject for Steve. His parents aren't exactly the type to do big family gatherings with homecooked meals. The few times Steve can remember his parents being around for Thanksgiving they went on vacations, had other people cater or cook for them.

But a movie night with new friends and a smorgasbord of foods from all over that might include some semblance of a Thanksgiving theme sounds like too nice an idea to pass up. New traditions doesn't sound so bad. The movies don't sound familiar (and wouldn't have, since Steve's just three years shy of Honey I Shrunk The Kids Being released) except there is something oddly familiar about Fellowship of the Ring.

Anyone sitting next to Steve during Fellowship might notice him perk right up at the first mention of Mordor and The Shire.
]

No fucking way. [ His first thought is wait 'til Eddie finds out, followed by the realization that, no. Unless Eddie shows up on this space station, alive by some miracle, that's simply not possible.

While not watching movies, Steve can be found helping himself to food, especially pie, and okay, the fossil digging kits are actually kind of cool, and he never had anything like this as a kid so sue him for trying to heal his inner child.

Besides, after that bummer of a sobering realization, he could really use a little bit of a pick me up.

And maybe a little bit of wine.

[Given his prior experience with these sorts of bed-sheet-potluck setups, Clayton had not expected to get quite so invested in the movies being show tonight as he has. And yet here he is, watching this strange movie about hobbits and wizards and shit with such rapt interest that he's barely moved or blinked for the last half an hour. The bowl of white chocolate chips in his lap that he grabbed as a substitute for popcorn is mostly empty by now.]

[Suddenly, Clayton's attention is snatched away from the enrapturing film by someone sitting next to him, talking over the movie. That's a little annoying, but she seems so damn earnest about it that Clayton has a hard time staying irritated. He glances at Sabriel out of the corner of his eye]

I dunno. Hadn't thought about any of that. [Clayton turns his head slightly to face her and winces at the way his stiff neck cracks. Whoops. Probably should stretch a little.] Maybe they explain it later?

Think you did.

[Rosinante has also discovered the pie, and what a treat. He's got one slice each of pumpkin, apple, and also a savory sort, sausage and leek and potato. Don't judge, he's tall, he can eat all the pie he wants, probably. He smiles at Ed as he has a seat next to him, and lifts a bite of apple with his fork before gulping it down.

He keeps his voice down though, because there's a movie on. Moana, first of the night, and it's pretty cute. Makes him miss the sea, but at least he's just come back from having a little taste of it.]

A movie about seeing the world from up high could be interesting! And they don't have to bring them all the way there, just over the mountain!

[But Sabriel shrugs. She can also see the the appeal of the fight scenes.]

I mean, all they'd have to do is get to him, and it would be much easier than sealing away something with needle-teeth and multiple arms. All he can really do in that shape is look at them, they'd just have to worry about his minions.

I mean, I hope they do. I definitely want to see how this ends.

[Yes! Ed will just help himself to some apple pie. And probably inwardly be comparing it to Winry's. To Gracia's. But at the least this is something. Something of a treat. He isn't recalling the questions Newt had been asking, that the pie might be here because Ed may have mentioned it at some point. He stabs some pie with his fork and gives a nod.]

Mm. I was back here. Something seemed to mess up and not all of us were sent on the mission. I'm just glad you guys are back alright.

[At the least. Moana does seem to fascinate Edward. Mostly because he is not so experienced with the ocean back home. Nor could he swim in it even if he wanted to, with his auto-mail anyway. But still.]

Yeah. We worried about you all. Glad we had enough people with us to get that orb, though. It didn't want to make it easy on us. The wildlife wasn't much fun, either.

[Actually they're incredibly lucky that not only did they have enough people, they had some of the right people. That was probably the closest they've come to not being able to retrieve one of those things, in retrospect.

This film, meanwhile, is puzzling. It looks so real, and yet no people he's seen look like this, with their exaggerated features. Maybe it's made with technology like their simulation room on board? That's all he can figure. Strange stuff.]

You and I have very different definitions of interesting. If I had to watch a movie that was shot from up high for two hours, I'd die of boredom. Unless they gave the orcs wings somehow. [But then it would be a very different movie.] And yeah, if they had any sense they'd ask the eagles to just drop 'em off outside Mordor and save them the trip, but then what're you gonna do with the next two hours?

[As for Sauron, or Saruman, or whatever the hell his name is, Dante shrugs.]

Doesn't the guy have a lot of minions? They're [give him a second while he counts them out on his hand] nine people. Might be they've got a couple tricks up their sleeves and all, but I don't see them surviving a fight against an army.

I can imagine. The missions are rough enough with all of us helping out. Just glad you guys made it back alright.

[Ed just wishes he could have helped out himself. But it couldn't be helped, that things were kinda messed up with getting them all to the mission this time. The main thing was that the orb was recovered and they had gotten back. The ones that were sent.

He glances to the film, watching the water, the ocean specifically as he enjoys the pie.]

I've never actually seen the ocean in person. Amestris is landlocked, between all these other countries we fought with to get more land over the years. But I gather this is just a story, right? Water doesn't really....move like that?

[ At first, Steve pays little attention, since he's more engrossed in the movie. It isn't until she speaks up that Steve gets one good look at her and looks kind of like he's seen a ghost.

Because somehow he's managed not to run into her until now, but he can tell instantly that despite the resemblance, this isn't Max. Which is both a comfort and a curse. He tells himself he's just missing home, that's it. Has nothing to do with any residual guilt or anything.
]

No, not exactly allergic. Just. Not usually my thing. [ It's probably best not to dive into that whole other pile of guilt he feels surrounding Eddie. This is supposed to be a fun time, and he doesn't want to bring down the mood, so he'll just set aside those feelings to unpack later, is all. ]

[personal profile] shishkabob 2022-12-03 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Something other than evil crows. Those get old.

[He pauses, thinking this over.]

If you're a giant eyeball, you can't really do anything but see. Sure, they could distract him, but if he's such a huge terrifying dark lord, he's got security measures in place, right? Maybe elite guards around the tower, maybe traps, maybe some dark magic meant to confuse the intrepid hero who thinks they can kill him.

And even if they can sneak up on him, where would you stab him? We don't even know if that's a real eyeball.
