Gusu Birthday
CHARACTERS: Lan Wangji and you
LOCATION: All Over
DATE: Oct 7
CONTENT: Cooking, Handstands, and Tea
WARNINGS: none
Mao Shi & Chen Shi (5am-9am)
Wangji wakes, dresses, and makes his way to the common area where he sits and meditates for a half hour (one hour by the current standard).
He then makes his way to the kitchen to explore what is available and watch others who may be up cook while waiting for Zhao to arrive and teach him about all of it properly. If anyone is there and wants to engage in conversation, he will do his best to be social.
Wangji will remain in the kitchen cooking and baking with Zhao.
Si Shi & Wu Shi (9am-1pm)
Wangji cleans up and heads to the training room. He does not particularly dress down for this, remaining in three layers and forgoing only his outermost robe that usually remains unbelted. When he gets there, he greets whoever else may be there with a polite bow and finds a small space to the side. He begins his workout by folding and tying the dragging parts of his robes up, ensuring his hair is entirely secured in a bun, tucking the ends of his forehead ribbon into his mouth and then dropping smoothly into a perfect handstand. After about 15 minutes of holding that pose, he begins to do push-ups while otherwise remaining in the handstand. Another 15 minutes of that and he moves to doing them one handed, alternating arms after about ten minutes. That was his warm up.
At that point he rolls out of his handstand, calmly fixes his clothing and hair so that they fall appropriately, and pulls his sword to begin practicing his forms. If someone else approaches, he puts his sword behind himself so that it is safely away from them, and greets them with a bow of his head.
Wei Shi & Chen Shi (1pm-5pm)
Wangji spends the earlier part of Wei Shi with his brother.
After leaving Xichen, he retreats to the Ximusic room where he can be found practicing tentatively on an electric guitar. He does not hold it in the traditional hold, but rather upright as one would a pipa, which is more familiar to him. He is attempting some basic cords with a western score that is largely unfamiliar to him - both in the written format and the means of denoting scales. But despite some obvious struggle (and more than a few sour notes that get replayed until the come out properly) he does not look upset or frustrated. He is focused and clearly invested in learning. He will easily pause his playing to greet anyone who comes in and ask if they need him to stop with a quiet, "The instrument is loud. This Wangji can return later if it will disturb you."
Yu Shi & Xu Shi (5pm-9pm)
Wangji goes to visit the simulation room and if it is not locked, takes a look inside to see who might be using it and what scenario they have up. He is still very unused to the magics of that room and interested in experiencing whatever others have chosen to bring to it. He does not know enough to call a world into being himself, after all, but is unduly fascinated all the same. He gets around chastising himself for his too keen interest by excusing it with the fact that the room is necessary for training and successfully completing missions.
Once his curiosity is sated there, he makes his way to the sunlight room to spend the last hour of the day relaxing in the closest thing to nature there is on the station. He wanders the paths leisurely, looking almost wistful as he takes in the beauty of the place and allows it to soothe his spirit. Tomorrow is his first mission and he will need the peace.
Hai Shi (9pm)
Time for all good Lans to be in bed.
[Feel free to tag with a different scenario if you want. Wangji is puttering around the station today trying to make his brother's birthday special and psyching himself up for his first mission]

Hai Shi (9pm)
Time for all good Lans to be in bed.

[ even though he's still avoiding looking at her, recognition flashes across her face at the name, and so does a flicker of a smile. ]
Xichen's brother? [ she remembers xichen saying something about him having a very serious demeanor, and it makes a lot of sense now, especially when he starts to ramble off about meal time rules. suddenly the whole thing is more amusing to her than anything else. ]
Yeah, it's probably healthier to stick to a meal schedule but I don't keep much of a schedule. [ he is right but she is a disaster. ]
no subject
Mm.
[He nods to confrim his relationship and then continues on with more rules because hey, it's apparently working for him. Which is good. A familiar topic allows his shoulders to relax ever so slightly, to feel more comfortable.]
My sect keeps a very strict schedule in our home and whenever it is socially acceptable to. Bed at Hai Shi. Wake at Mao Shi.
[He did not bother to clarify since she spoke a dialect well enough to understand. Which was also a comfort.
After a brief pause, he added, with no change in expression but definitely some amusement in his tone.]
Guests complain about those rules the most.
no subject
[ oh this is going to be so funny to her. maybe not for wangji, but knowing what she does about the world xichen is from and how far into the past they seem to be against how polite he is? immediately she wants to be a troll, but she supposes she can be nicer about it. for xichen's sake. ]
[ it's gonna be so fucking hard though. ]
What happens if the guests don't follow them?
no subject
That was a cheering thought.
In answer to her question, though...]
Depends on their status as a guest and the rules broken. Guest disciples, those who study with us, are expected to follow the rules as any other disciple of GusuLan. Their punishments range from writing lines to strikes with a rod.
...very few guest disciples have ever earned the rod. It has been almost two decades since one has.
[That was partly due to the war, partly due to guest disciples being more cautious with their rule breaking, and partly because of Lan Wangji himself encouraging lighter punishments for all but the most heinous of actions. If he had his way, Wei Ying would be the last guest disciple to ever take such a harsh punishment for the simple act of sneaking in alcohol and causing no disruption or destruction to anyone.]
If the guest is not a student, then unless their actions are harmful, they are given liberty to do as they will so long as they respect specific rules pertaining to the Cloud Recesses themselves. If they do not, they are asked to leave.
[Forcefully if needed.
Though Wangji's expression has largely not changed, he is growing far more relaxed. His speech, which Andy may recognize sticks to the most formal of registers, takes on the kind of tone a teacher or someone who regularly lectures has. He prefers less words, but if he treats it as a lesson, he can work around his own preferences to ensure he is being clear, if not concise.]
no subject
[ but she does also notice the shift in his speech, even if it doesn't register at first. andy herself doesn't pay particularly mind to propriety or formalness even there, which becomes a problem with japanese especially. it doesn't help that there are differences between modern mandarin and old chinese languages. she's bound to slip up once in a while. ]
[ she thinks for a moment. ]
Have you ever kicked someone out?
no subject
[This, at least, Wangji can answer simply.]
no subject
Yeah? How'd you do it? Literally kicking their ass out the door?
no subject
There was no violence against them. They were informed they had overstayed their welcome and were given the choice of removing themselves or being removed. They removed themselves.
no subject
"Informed" alone leaves a lot up to the imagination. You could have given some vaguely threatening undertones or broke the news gently. There's a lot of wriggle room in between.
no subject
no subject
See, now I'm getting a clearer picture. What rule did they break?
no subject
More than one.
[Wangji was not usually the one to be called on to kick out those guests who overreached, but in the case of Su sect, he had the personal pleasure of doing so.]
no subject
[ she laughs at his response. ]
Do I even get a clue about the rules or are they super secret?
no subject
[A pause. A twitch of his lips.]
I can recite them for you.
no subject
There's probably too many to keep track of. [ a beat. ] For me.
no subject
[A beat of his own.]
There are over four thousand.
no subject
[ she simply does not have the fucks to follow even a single rule sometimes, especially if she thinks it's stupid. ]
no subject
No. Many of them are there to clarify other rules that some have, in the past, too freely interpreted to avoid the spirit of the law and maintain only the letter. Those are not really necessary, but it is easier to add a rule that fits the circumstance in which others have been abused, than to change those already known.
And stone is difficult to alter once carved.
[His opinion did not mean he wouldn't respect the rules. But he also was no longer foolish enough to be trapped by abiding them utterly.]
no subject
Did you guys not have paper yet? [ she knows their world is into the past, far enough that andy's nostalgia is pinged in a distant way, but if you think she remembers when paper was invented, you would be terribly wrong. ]
Rules can always be changed. That's the point of them being man-made.
no subject
We have paper. The rules are carved into the mountain expressly so that they cannot be easily changed. They are the foundations of our sect's principles and beliefs. Our way of life. The first one hundred were created by the founder of our sect and his fated one, the rest have been added on by the elders and leaders as the generations have passed.
no subject
But it does prove my point about the shifting nature of man-made laws, even if they're carved in stone. Nothing like that is meant to stay the same forever.
no subject
That is why more are added. To show the nuance as time goes on.
[Without the risk that someone with malicious intent would systematically go through all the written copies and change them to say something else. ...well, someone with malicious intent or someone with no respect for the rules and a lot of time on their hands who thought it would be funny. Fortunately that particular prankster simply changed every written instance in the public section of the library of 'do not talk to loudly' to 'do not fart too loudly'. The culprit had never been caught but considering that every disciple under a certain age had to help repair the books and bring them back to standard, he expects that they decided the punishment wasn't worth the crime.]
The rules are not inflexible. They are meant to be standards for how one conducts themself and allow much in the way of personal expression. But they are also based on a particular way of living. Other sects and clans have their own rules and expectations. And when in their lands, we comport ourselves accordingly so long as it does not compromise our principles.
no subject
I can understand the logic, and I've kind of gotten a sense of your compound from your brother. Your systems are just designed that way. [ she saw the compound itself too, on their very first meeting. ]
The variation of standards is too much to keep track of. I don't really put much stock in long term rules. [ please just let her go live in the wilds, there's just too much in the world to follow anymore. ] Mostly I have my own standards, not anyone else's.
no subject
[Most of them didn't survive for long. Society was not kind to those who stood away from it - be it through malicious intent or a rejection of the injustices they saw perpetrated.
Wangji sucked in a heavy breath to prevent himself from yawning. It was getting close to bedtime and since he had no night hunt or other reason to stay up, his body was starting to feel the pull of his schedule.]
I must go. It will soon be Hai Shi.
no subject
[ she's tried many times over to be part of society. different cultures, different people, but she outlives all of them and finds the idea of constantly re-learning new rules bothersome. she has her small family and that's all she needs. that's all she can really cling to. ]
[ andy recognizes the sign of his yawn even if he hides it simply because she finds herself yawning too, idly covering her mouth with her fingers. ]
Hour of the pig. [ a beat. ] That makes me want pork. I should go eat something, so I'll leave you to your rigid schedule. Welcome aboard, Lan Wangji.
