I đź—ˇ THE BLADE ITSELF INCITES TO DEEDS OF VIOLENCE
[ she could ask joe or nicky or even booker, but the kind of violence andy wants to do now that she is free from the sea isn't fair to put even on them, even though they could handle it and come back from it. she doesn't know if she wants to fight a person so much as simply destroy something. ]
[ so very shortly after returning to the station from a long few days (weeks?) under the ocean, andy gathers up a bottle of vodka, a couple of snack bags, and a few different weapons from her collection, taking them all to the training room at an odd hour of the day (or night), with the intention of going to town on the dummies. she's wearing leggings and a sports bra for ease of movement, with low but snug boots. ]
[ she downs about half a bottle for her warm up and then immediately starts striking with a sword. there's no build up - it's just a slip into instant aggression, the blows landing with clear intent to harm. this is not practice for her. it's hack and slash for the sake of it. ]
[ in a slick and swift slice, the sword cleaves through the neck of a dummy, sending the head rolling across the floor towards the feet of a person who's just walked in. ]
It's all yours, I don't need it.
[ at the very end of it all, every dummy is in pieces. arms and legs have been hacked off from various points. heads are missing. chests are split open, sliced and stabbed in vital spaces. none of them are upright and the room is a mess. she'll tidy up in a bit, as she considers trying to program the simulation room with more. moving targets might be more useful, because she still has so much energy she wants to get out. ]
[ she hauls her axe over her shoulder and finishes up the remains of her vodka. a water would probably be smarter, but she isn't here to be smart. ]
II đź—ˇ IT IS THE WINE THAT LEADS ME ON
[ andy drinking is not a surprise. what might be instead is the actual wobble to her step, the glazed look in her eyes, because she is drunk. she still handles herself fairly well because her intention is to get absolutely trashed and she's not quite there yet, despite the trail of bottles she's left in her quest to get here. ]
[ she stumbles back into the kitchen and collides with one of the kitchen counters at the hip, but bounces off it and keeps moving towards the liquor cabinet, yanking it open and squinting inside before she pulls out a bottle of vodka. she doesn't quite startle if someone suddenly appears nearby, but she does tuck it in close. there is a small slur in her tone, quiet enough that it's blink and you miss it. ]
This one's mine. [ but there's more and she stares into the cabinet like she's debating a second bottle, even as she sways on her feet. ]
[ or maybe it's later in the sunlight room, where there are quite a few empty bottles abandoned in the grass as andy herself sits near the stream. she's holding one in her hand, alongside two more unopened beside her. it's dusk and she is waiting for the artificial sun to set, because she longs for the stars and these holograms will have to suffice for now. despite the state of her, she isn't unawares when she has company. ]
What's that fucking phrase? [ oh there is definitely more of a slur in her tone now, as she takes another sip straight from the bottle currently in her hand. ] Treat yourself?
[ this is not what treat yourself means, but it sounds about right for her. bottoms up! ]
III đź—ˇ EACH MAN DELIGHTS IN THE WORK THAT SUITS HIM BEST
[ if you saw andy the night before, absolutely hammered, it might be a surprise to see her mulling about the kitchen like normal. she's tired, but there's no sense of a hangover in her expression or movements. she's just her typical existential tired, gathering up a collection of food and shoving it into a backpack. there's a cereal bar half in her mouth as she chews at it, and she tucks in both a bottle of water and of whiskey alongside the food. she's dressed in comfortable pants and hiking boots with a long sleeve shirt, looking every bit like she's set for an adventure that is not meant for space. ]
[ no, today is the day she tries to program the simulation room. all on her own. because she wants to go on a fucking hike!!!! ]
If you could climb any mountain, what would you pick? [ just because andy has already climbed virtually all of them on earth doesn't mean she knows the kind of climb she wants today. she'll decide when she gets there. ]
[ or perhaps you enter the simulation room after she's done her best to program it and find yourself at the base of a smaller sized mountain ridge. it's green and deciduous, with a bright sun in the sky and a healthy smatter of clouds. she thought about trying to replicate denali, her favorite to solo, but ultimately decided something smaller that would just take her a few hours would be best, bringing her back in time to eat a real dinner. the prospect has her in much better spirits than she seems to have been the last few days, both on the mission itself and after the return. she sits on a log as she rummages through her backpack, just checking she's got all she needs before she Begins. ]

I know.
[She won’t try to stop her again, but she’s in absolutely no rush to leave her alone like this either.]
The first time I tried alcohol, it was cooking sherry.
[Her nose wrinkles at the memory,]
It was awful, and my foster parents were pissed.
no subject
What a shitty first. [ she has in fact also tried it. mostly to annoy nicky. ]
But probably harmless compared to other choices you could have made. Did they get over it?
no subject
[One that ended up with her mixing way too many drinks. Daisy smiles sadly at her question,]
I was kicked out a few weeks later.
[It occurs to her just how much she hasn’t said about her life growing up, or anything about her life back home. It’s a subconscious choice.]
I didn’t know it at the time, but I was being moved around on purpose every few months.
no subject
[ she remembers, she thinks, daisy having said something about being born in china but raised in the states. ]
The American foster system can have some shady practices but something tells me it wasn't just that in your case. Kicking someone out for a drink is a shitty move.
no subject
Fourteen, I think.
[Somewhere around that age. Honestly, whether she realizes it or not, there’s a lot of things she’s forgotten about from her childhood.]
I was being moved around for my own safety. I just didn’t know until years later.
no subject
[ she takes a few sips from the bottle. ] So the spy life always had you in its clutches?
no subject
[Daisy teases, watching as Andy drinks some more. Smiling sadly, she looks down at the grass and plucks a few pieces.]
I guess you could say that.
no subject
Just give me a straight answer. [ she points the bottle at daisy. ] It's starting to feel a little unfair that I keep babbling my secrets and you won't tell me shit.
no subject
[Daisy smiles over at her,]
I work with S.H.I.E.L.D., I’m a field agent.
no subject
[ she smiles back. ] I don't know if I know what shield is, besides someone having fun with an acronym. [ she is drunk with a shitty memory, she can't be blamed for forgetting if she's heard of them. ] But I'm glad I was right about the spy thing.
no subject
Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division. I doubt you’d know what it is since Inhumans don’t exist where you are.
no subject
Did someone specifically pick the words so it would spell shield? It seems too perfect. [ she would not blame them tbh. ]
Were they watching you since you were a baby? [ a beat. ] A real baby. [ just to clarify because she does toss the word around lightly. ]
no subject
[Daisy smiles sadly at the calcification,]
They found me after—
[It’s still hard to think about that night, even if she doesn’t actually remember it.]
My mother was an Inhuman, and a group called HYDRA found out about her. About what she could do. They destroyed the village trying to find her, trying to find me.
SHIELD was called in.
[She’s never talked about this, because everyone involved already knew.]
Almost everyone involved in that mission died trying to protect me. So they put me in the foster system, ordered them to move me around every few months. So HYDRA couldn’t find me.
no subject
I can sort of follow the logic at wanting to keep you hidden, especially after something that destructive, but it's a shitty way to treat a kid.
How'd they keep your alien powers quiet?
no subject
[It definitely doesn’t take that pain away, but it helped fill in those gaps.]
I didn’t get my powers until I was 26.
no subject
[ it abruptly occurs to her that she has no idea how old daisy is. ]
And how old are you now?
no subject
It’s only now that she realizes the topic of her age has never come up and she laughs.]
32. Not nearly as impressive as your age.
no subject
How long were you with SWORD? They adopt you right out of school? [ wait. ] SHIELD. Is there a HELMET too? You should complete the trifecta.
no subject
I’m not great at math, but that doesn’t sound right.
[Rolling her eyes playfully when Andy mixes up the name, Daisy shoves at her.]
No, and I dropped out of school.
[Not that it really matters.]
I found them, and then let them find me. Realized that if I had any chance of finding my family, it was by weaseling my way in with SHIELD.
no subject
Dropped out of which school? I never really went, so I don't know what's normal right now. [ she tried university once or twice, but it just wasn't for her. ]
[ she puffs an amused laugh and takes another sip. ] That sounds like a very you move. But I still have no idea how long you were with them. [ see again, her lack of understanding of school years. ]
no subject
[Daisy plucks a piece of grass and rolls it between her fingers,]
High school. I decided it wasn’t for me.
[There was a lot more that went into it, but she didn’t want to get into any of it.]
I’ve been with SHIELD since I was 24.
no subject
You're still ahead of me. Can't drop out of something you never attended in the first place. [ does she even really know what a high school is? probably not. so many countries have different names for different levels. she can't keep track. ]
[ give her a second. time for math. is eight years a long time to be with an organization? she takes a slow sip of the bottle. ] I'm assuming that's normally a good length of time to stick to one job.
no subject
[It hadn’t meant much to Daisy anyway, especially when she didn’t have a support system growing up.]
It doesn’t feel like a job to me, but, yeah I guess so.
[She doesn’t reach for the bottle but she does watch Andy as she sips at the vodka.]
no subject
[ there, she can say it and not feel guilty, because she is drunk and away from her brothers who love school. ]
The purpose of a job changes all the fucking time anyway.
no subject
So did I. Most of it felt useless anyway.
[Maybe she would’ve loved school if she had a support system, but she didn’t.]
Lunch was easily my favorite period, if I stayed at school that day long enough to get there.
