MINGLE | The "Everyone's Tired and Hungry" Post-Mission Pizza Party

CHARACTERS: Everyone! A free-for-all general chill-out time, thrown haphazardly together by a mad scientist.
LOCATION: The Mess Hall
DATE: Sometime after the mission. Y'all know.
CONTENT: The Orb Crew tries to relax for a hot goddamn minute.
WARNINGS: Likely drinking or drunkenness, the usual party antics. Very mildly image heavy, NSFW for naughty threads, properly marked.

It seems the party has been properly set up for you all! But of course, there's an exuberant amount of 'Newton*' flair added to it, and people can find all sorts of random things — markers for drawing on the pizza boxes (which he distinctly requested, super important) cover the tables, and it's clear by the one designed like a Pikachu and a dinosaur that he's already began scribbling on them. He's also made... board games literally comprised of pizza boxes as well, including Chess and Connect Four, which is lovingly set up side-by-side on a table and done with intent to annoy.

They've got one deck of cards for games, no chips; you'll have to just make some of your own out of pizza box cardboard. The most grand of all creation appears to be a normal-sized Skeeball table, made of flimsy material, with oranges for balls. It may or may not last the night, but it sure works for now!

There's a very strong bottle of liquor from their last mission open for everyone, and, well, it will get you drunk quite fast if you're not careful. But it's also a Bring Your Own Beer situation; hope you guys asked Viv for some to plan for the party!

Lastly, there's classic bar rock playing from an iPhone rigged to a speaker that looks very very cobbled together, from loose bits and bobs from the lab's many boxes. If you go fiddle with that phone's playlist, you may be able to find a small collection of songs that aren't rock, but are likely from the 90's or early 2000's.

And yes, there is a couch with a sign on it, designated specifically for people who wish to nap. If they'd like. Don't be rude, let people lay down when they're sleepy. (Maybe Newton just put that there for him, honestly.) There are 50 pizzas total, which is practically a whole-ass pizza per person, so enjoy! (And thanks, Viv!)

Feel free to bring your own flair to the party, if you'd like.

These are just a few things for a m b i e n c e.

(*If you mention him, he will appear like a terrible omen.)

"What, you fighting a war against your liver?" Rosinante replies with a snort.

And then proceeds to do about the same, by throwing back his own glass, then thunking it down on the table with a new lipstick smudge to decorate the rim.

Look, this isn't the time for too much restraint. A little, always; he's internalized his training well enough that he prefers not getting completely wasted unless he's completely alone, where his tongue can't slip. But for today he can have more than he usually might.

"It's a plum," he then sighs, a little late. "Never had pickled plums? Great with rice. Great with booze, actually."

"Yeah, I noticed it's not popular here. Not with guys, anyway. I never used to wear it, but I kinda..."

Had to as part of the undercover role he was stuck in for the last four years, but that's not really a topic he wants to talk about. Should've stopped himself talking sooner, but that's the alcohol's doing, and now he has to make up a reason. Not hard, just annoying that he let himself slip.

"Last crew I was sailing with all had custom looks, and I thought it'd be fun to join in. Next thing you know, I'm used to it. I'll have to come up with something new here, maybe. And hey, you know, never too late to get back into it. Eyeliner's cool."

That is a genuine opinion, there. Fact is, he did get used to it and rather likes it now, but makeup is a lot more popular with men in his world than it must be on Earth if everyone else here is anything to go by. Or maybe they all just keep it to their... horror parties, whatever that was Newt just said.

His crew, as if he was ever really one of them. As if he didn't dream daily of that bright eventual future that ended with all of them on the lowest levels of the government prison.

His crew.

He smiles, and has a sip of his drink as if reminiscing fondly.

"Ah, just a trade ship. Whatever paid to transport as cargo. Sometimes it was art, sometimes wine, sometimes guns. North Blue's a rough sea and not every crew's willing to tackle it, but home's home, I guess. Between fending off the waves and the pirates who would've robbed the ship of every scrap, we made a name for ourselves well enough. I was only with them the last few years since they needed another hand who could shoot and sail but most of them had been together over a decade."

"Oh, yeah, of course. Lots of little islands out there hardly more than isolated villages, but it's amazing what people can do when they don't have much. North Blue creates a lot of inventors and scientists. And then there are some pretty prosperous kingdoms too with lots of land, culture, food. Great beer," he says with a smirk. "Guess it comes from needing to stay warm up there. I made it farther south a few times too. There's an archipelago called Sabaody right in the tropics where the land itself is mostly sunken, but then giant mangrove trees grow up out of the shallow water and people have whole cities built around them."

Look, this part he doesn't have to invent at all. The variety in his world is something he's always been in awe of, and now in hearing bits and pieces about where other people come from he's able to appreciate all that diversity even more.

"Little Garden does," he says after a few seconds' thought. "I've never been there, but I've heard of it. It's in that area near the equator too, actually. They call that sea the Grand Line since the currents run east to west, with dead zones in the wind and waves to the north and south. Hard to get through the dead spots, plus those calm belts, as we call them, are the breeding grounds for Sea Kings."

He's half tempted to draw up a diagram but the pizza boxes and pens are out of reach and he can't be bothered to get up. Instead he has another drink. Maybe it makes enough sense as it is.

"Means there's a lot of islands like that down there that are relatively untouched. It's a pain to get there and a pain to get out. Lotta rookie sailors try to head down there thinking they'll find something to make themselves rich, and then nobody hears from them again."

Right, the invasion. Hermann had told him about that a little more too. Picturing Sea Kings from space coming to destroy and consume is pretty genuinely terrifying. What a world those two come from.

Newt's next set of segues is a little chaotic, but maybe that's the alcohol settling in that keeps him from following exactly how he got from calm belts to holding up his hand. The gasp is startling enough that Rosinante jerks back as if there's something critical he's supposed to have noticed, and he splashes a sip of whiskey across his lap. Well... it'll evaporate.

It's probably also the alcohol that makes him decide to just go with Newt's request once he's done frowning at the splatter. Here, have a hand, all fingers splayed wide as if preparing for a high five.

"I'm not that big," he replies, hoping there's an explanation coming.

For a moment he can't do much more than stare - not at their hands, but at the face Newt is making, the delight he seems to experience from comparing hand sizes.

But also, okay, it's kind of funny. His look of confusion relaxes and he shakes his head, smiling just a little. "You really like dinosaurs, don't you?" he asks as he retracts his hand.

Some of those words hit his ears a little different, enough for him to raise an eyebrow. He does actually understand them, given the common creole used in North Blue and all its influences, but those in particular come from the region Flevance was part of. He can't help but be reminded of that poor doomed country and that poor once-doomed kid in particular who occupies so much space in his heart.

He can't fix Flevance, but being here means he can fix so much else. It's no wonder that every other thing makes him think of Law.

But, right, Newt is continuing on about dinosaurs.

"Guess if somehow you ever visit where I'm from now that we can apparently go from world to world, you'll just have to go... document them somehow," he says as he tries to think of how to do that. Take some back? Just steal dinosaurs through a portal? Well, sure, why not.

"Aren't they... kinda big? Maybe this place would size them down, though, since that's what it did to me," he says, considering it. "You'd end up with a nine foot dinosaur blocking the corridors."

Which he then grins widely at because he's just tipsy enough for it to strike him as pretty damned funny.

He nearly asks what a raptor is, and then decides the details don't matter too much. Newton isn't taking this completely seriously, right?

"If we ever end up on my world, I'll help you figure out how to get there, all right? So, what's this Jurassic Park thing."

No, obviously he hasn't seen it, but now he's curious.

"I can imagine a lot of visitors end up eaten," he says, given that's easy enough to guess. Movies are far from common, accessible children's entertainment where he's from but this isn't the first he's heard of the concept now that he's here. The plotline doesn't sound too far removed from some of the ridiculous pulp adventure novels he's read (and enjoyed greatly, thank you very much).

"I've never seen a movie, not like that. We sometimes got to see live news broadcasts from the video snails, but no Jurassic Park. Maybe there's a way to do that here?" Must be, this place can do all kinds of things he probably doesn't know about yet.
