Let's Get All-Catching

[ Enough time passes that Yzak is in good enough shape to start getting physical again. It's not a very long time at all, really, as Coordinators can heal up a bit quicker than your average human. And now that he has, he can finally tackle some other plans he'd made during their mission. Specifically, the one he made with Newton.

By now he's memorized the layout of the station and where his teammates are all staying, so on one particularly quiet evening, he's knocking on the door to Newton's room. ]

Hey.

[ He calls out, to let him know who it is. ]

... Huh...? Who — Oh! Hey, dude.

[Newton pops his head out of the door with disheveled hair and a pair of sweats on, his eyebrows raised and big chest tattoo on full display. On the bed behind him, Clara's bundled up dozing in his blankets, looking a lot like a napping lion on a warm rock. Did Newton forget he and Yzak were gonna have a practice thing once they got back and Yzak heals? Maybe! But to be fair, this is Newton, and he remembers maybe ten minutes into the recent past.]

What's going on? You need something?

[He'll slap on some clothes and help you out, bro, just say the word.]

[ Yzak's eyes sure travel to a lot of different places within the span of a couple of seconds. To Newton's bed-head, to his confused expression, down to the tattoo on his chest, back up over his shoulder to the sleeping Clara (who he will drop his voice for when he speaks again sos not to wake her), back to meet Newton's gaze.

He doesn't look particularly ready or alert right now, but Yzak replies anyway. ]

I was going to see if you were free, right now. So we can start your training, as discussed.

But if you were sleeping or busy, I can always come back later.

[He double-takes over his shoulder, but says:]

Nah, no! I'm good. I should probably be getting up, anyway. [Scrubbing at his eyes, he holds up a finger.] Give me, like, five minutes! I'll be right out, no problem.

[Because of course he's gonna drum up the energy to go do something like learning how to punch someone else in the face without getting punched back immediately; the more things he can squeeze into his schedule, the less time he has drowning in a sea of his own incessant thoughts.

He vanishes back into the room long enough to start dragging on a t-shirt and his shoes, stopping long enough to lean over and give Clara an all-too-purposefully obnoxious smooch on the face and a free pass to linger around as long as she'd like in there. When he finally pops back out, he's still a bit disheveled, but it's not like they're going out to a nice bar or something.]

Let's go, Mr. Miyagi, I'm ready to wash some cars.

[............... is that a pop culture reference yzak would get]

[ Yzak patiently (shocking) waits outside, leaning back against the wall opposite of Newton's door. His ever nosy mind does wander, though, about peeping Clara in his room, about that anonymous network post (which again, he was Very Judgmental about). He guesses there was reason for something like that, after all.

But it's whatever, as the thought leaves his mind when Newton reappears.

And he raises his eyebrow. ]

Mr. What?

[ That answers that question. ]

[Newt just sighs in sorrow for Yzak.

The future is full of misery, if the guy doesn't know classic movies.]

Oh, nothing, nothing. What's the lesson gonna be?

Am I gonna learn how to get people into chokeholds? Oh! Or how to clothesline someone! Because I would love to learn some WWE moves.

[ This is why someone like Yzak needs someone like Dearka around who'd be much more into these references, so people can realize the future isn't actually full of misery, Yzak is just a weird loser.

A weird loser who starts to lead the way to the training room. ]

You need to learn some basics before you go anywhere near something like a chokehold. But that being said, I did already say that I'm not planning to go easy on you! And I expect only the best results when it comes to my team! That applies to this team just as much as my team back home.

[Newton puffs his chest out a little.]

You don't have to go easy on me! I'm tougher than I look!

[No he's not. But fake it 'til you make it!]

I'm guessing you had your team back home trained like a bunch of super-warriors.

Hmph. We'll see about that. [ Yzak, ever competitive, takes that as a challenge. He's ready to fling this tiny little nerd around. ]

And of course my team is well trained - I expect only the best! But their excellence doesn't only lie in their ability to fight, but their ability to think, and understand not only what's on the line, but what they should be fighting for. [ He has that same kind of pride in his voice he has when he boasts about his own accomplishments and standing. ] I know how things end without that correct kind of synergy - it goes to hell fast!

Many of them started out as new soldiers assigned to my team during the first war that returned when things got bad again. But a few of them I fought alongside beforehand, so I was already well aware of their abilities. Shiho's knowledge in improving her old model's beam cannons, Isaac's observational skills. And although his elite "status" was taken away from him, Dearka's as well aware as I am that such a status is only a uniform color! He wouldn't be my right hand man if I didn't think he could lead or if I didn't have complete trust in him and his input.

[Newton is in Danger.

But we'll worry about that later! For now:]

What about this crew? You think we'll measure up to your standards soon?

[He's smiling as he says it, of course.]

... You're all measuring up just fine, so far.

[ Though he has on that big boy "my opinion on this matter is the most important and clearly means everything" tone, there's a softness to that admission. ]

For not only the variation of skills that don't even exist where I come from, but the fact that we've managed to work together so well when we're not a properly put together military. Communication and understanding is important in that regard, and it seems like everybody here is at least aware of those facts.

Hey, don't speak too soon; we've only had one mission so far.

[It could go downhill from here. Newt, however, doesn't sound very concerned despite his teasing commentary.]

Everyone here's great. I mean, it felt... natural. To work together.

I'm not used to being a part of the team. Not like that, anyway. Usually, the scientists at the PPDC are left to themselves; we don't... really blend in with the other members of the crew. At all.

[ And you know Yzak when it comes to replying to something, teasing or not. Serious zone only. ] I do fully expect to run into a mission that will serve to divide our numbers more when it comes to deciding how to handle it. But I only hope that despite lack of proper structure like my team back home has, it can be handled as best it can be. Since even structure doesn't always hold up.

And yet it was in part due to your research that helped solve your crisis back home. So I'm sure they wish they had treated you more as part of the team, after the fact.

It's not hard to acknowledge your talents and how valuable they are.

... Heh. Maybe.

Maybe I wasn't exactly the easiest to be around, especially near the end, there. A lot of stress, a lotta late nights... maybe a handful of manic episodes. But we got it all done.

[He nudges Yzak.]

And hey! They'll be super impressed when I add the talent of whoop-ass to my list of skills! Which will be credited to you first of all, of course.

[ He's definitely going to regret saying this once the new wave of teammates arrive, but, ]

Results are the most important. I've worked with numerous people that I can't stand, including someone who I used to be on a team with, before I became a commander myself, but even I'll admit their presence was crucial to things, after it's all said and done.

[ He squirms a little at the nudging. ]

Of course they'll be impressed, when it's something I've taught you! Not to mention that learning new skills is always a useful thing. I'm even doing that myself. Sabriel is teaching me magic.

... Sabriel is a saint.

[He doesn't elaborate on that, but you can assume it's a friendly dig at Yzak.

What kinda magic? I was kind of unsure, but the idea of mixing magic and science has been getting more and more appealing, especially after that last mission.

Her Charter magic. Which covers offensive as well as defensive and healing magic. All of which I intend to master, of course. [ Of COURSE. ]

I simply weighed my options after the last mission. When we were first attacked at the palace, some of the infected seemed near-invulnerable to physical attacks, while others seemed as such to magic. And during that last battle, the guards were using arrows that nullified one's ability to use magic if hit with one. Having magic in my arsenal along with my other skills would prove useful so I don't end up in a situation where I can't properly act against something.

Of course. I'd expect nothing else from you.

[Don't worry, Yzak, he has a pretty good read on you. Buddies, and all.]

Ah, right. Know a little bit of everything then. You gonna learn some engineering next?

A jack of all trades kinda situation?

I actually have begun reading up on aerospace engineering, at the very least. My home city focuses on it, and it was my mother's specialty when she served in our government. [ Big past tense there, haHA. ] Not that I'm necessarily looking to emulate her, [ haHA. ] but if I'm ever to properly represent my own city, I want to be prepared.

Beyond that, I'd need to see what catches my interest. But I don't like feeling idle.

[He jabs a thumb at himself, looking cheeky and confident as ever.]

... Hermann'd be a pretty good candidate, too. He could use the work, because he gets extra cranky when he's too idle.
