[open] Downtime mingle: beach party!

CHARACTERS: Any & all
LOCATION: Simulation room, beach style
DATE: Late May during downtime
CONTENT: Courtesy of a couple of your fellow orbers, the simulation room has turned into a beach party! For those missing the sea, or looking forward to summer, or just needing a break to relax after the last mission, all are welcome to join in.
WARNINGS: none

Colorful shells line the hallways of the Ximilia. Follow them, and you'll wind up at the simulation room. Once you step in the door, you'll find yourself surrounded by sand and sun and turquoise waters - or an evening of cool breezes and a purple-orange sunset sky. The water is warm and inviting. Come on in, relax, have fun, find a spot to sit and meditate. Whatever floats your boat!

I. Games and refreshments

Oceanside classics dot the sand. A beach volleyball net and ball are surrounded by lounge chairs with little tables and umbrellas for those who want to either play or spectate - though if you want to drag your chair elsewhere that looks easy enough to do too. Farther along there’s a pile of floaties and other inflatables, including a couple of enormous beach balls, and a bunch of pool noodles for either swimming with or battling it out in an epic swordfight among the waves.

At the center of the beach area are several tables laden with snacks and drinks. Chips and salsa (and nachos), sushi and poke, banana splits and shave ice, beer, rum, and fancy cocktails, and many other offerings are easy to find. And if you prefer your beach food cookout style, several grills are set up and ready to go, and a selection of meats and seafood, vegetables, burger and hot dog buns and all the trimmings are set out for any who wants to treat themselves or their friends to something fresh from the barbecue.

2. Boat dock

Feeling adventurous? At the dock are several small sailboats for those who want to try their hand at commanding one around the little tropical islands offshore. Make it all the way out to the islands, and enjoy snorkeling or diving in the reef among tropical fish - all the gear is waiting for you once you get there.

If even smaller is your style, try a jetski or sea kayak - or hop on one of the little motor boats and tow a banana boat behind for your friends.

(And if you combine those pool noodles with a jetski? Wave jousting, anyone?)

The end of the dock has an ice cream stand and a bunch of balloons, just for good measure - and anchored behind that is a moderately large wooden sailing ship that would probably look right at home in Earth’s 18th century. No cannons, this time, but it’s still a cool place to hang out and watch the waves.

3. Do You Want To Build a Snowman Sandcastle?

‘Sup, dude? Feeling artsy? Hell yeah. Tubular! The world is your oyster. Literally! Well, don’t use an oyster to build your sandcastle. We’ve got you covered, broski. There are shovels and buckets galore! All for you to create your pièce de résistance. Have a buddy or two tag along and help you construct your piece. Or go solo! Much like in the art world, there aren’t any rules to abide by. So if you have any special abilities to give your sandcastle some extra flare, then go for it! Make your own magical kingdom with moats, dragons, a combination taco bell/pizza hut. Get creative!

Word on the block says that there is a small competition happening. Best in show gets a free toothbrush! Ain’t that neat?! Not only have you won, but you are also winning in the oral hygiene department.

4. Sunset Bonfire

What better way to wind down your day out on the (simulated) beach than spending it out by the bonfire? There is a sizeable bonfire not too far from the shoreline, where the tides are lower this time at night. There are some options to roast s’mores by the fires. Maybe a weiner or two if you’re craving something more savory (vegan options are available!). Perhaps you are more musically inclined. In that case, there are a couple of ukuleles and drums lying around to pick up and play a little ditty for the crowd. Come gather around with those closest to you.

Alternatively, there are also fireworks and sparklers to make your night that much flashier.

This doesn’t have to be about having fun in the sun or pretending to be happy. Cleanse yourself. You all have made it this far into your journey with your crewmates. Find yourself in good company. Or maybe you need to find yourself in solitude in order to reflect. This is your chance to find yourself in the present and figure out how you all wish to shape your futures.

[It's difficult right up until it just isn't anymore, it seems like it. She's done this before when trying to learn a new skill, a new language or a new flight program in the old fighter helmet she'd found and repaired so long ago on Jakku. She's good at throwing herself fully into something until she's mastered it and it turns out swimming is no different.

And as much as she might not want to admit it out loud, Leonard being there to give her pointers and steady her is actually helpful. She glares at him the first time he puts his hand on her to steady her balance in the water, but huffs in annoyance at her own reticence and pulls his hand back when he does the right thing and takes it away. Even she has to admit that it's impossible to be coached to swim without allowing someone to touch you.

He's respectful with it, which isn't a shock when she stops to think about it, and after that it slowly starts to feel natural enough. When he suggests stopping, though, she comes to the realization that she hasn't done what feels like the goal of the whole thing.]

One second.

[She takes a breath and ducks under the water all at once, hands cutting through it to keep herself submerged in a reverse of the movements he'd shown her to keep her afloat. It's not terribly deep but the feeling is still a surprise, something that causes a spike of fear before it passes just as quickly. The sensation of pressure on her ears isn't uncomfortable, when she opens her eyes the water doesn't sting them, fake as it is.

It's... laughably simple, now that she's done it, and the part of her that pushes herself too hard decides that now is the time to see how long she can hold her breath.

Sorry Bones.]

( It's of course much easier once they acclimate to each other-- he all but smiles when Rey pulls his hand back to her, relieved, slipping into a much better rapport before it's time to put a pause on things.

They should probably have lunch, he realizes, unable to recall what he had for breakfast. Probably nothing aside from coffee, focused as he was on addressing Newt's appalling state. Liable to get caught up in thinking about all that again, and the work ahead,

Amused by her duck down in the water, Leonard gives Rey to thirty-Mississippi before he crouches, slipping a hand beneath the waves to briefly touch her shoulder and offer a questioning thumbs up– All good? it asks. )

[Gentle though it is, that hand on her shoulder does surprise her but it's the thumbs up that really throws her off. She could reach for his mind with the Force to find out what exactly that means but she doesn't, would never without permission and even then it would take some time to come around to the idea, so her only option is to surface and arch one eyebrow at him curiously.]

Yes?

Are you good?

( He clarifies, once he groks what her curious look is in reference to. McCoy sinks down beside her to cool off, carding a hand back through his wet, dark hair. )

It's a thing from home-- ( he makes a thumbs up again, then down, explaining each: ) 'Good', and 'Bad'. Kind of universal for us humans there, easy to forget not everyone knows it.

I'm familiar with the gesture, but I-

[She stops herself there, though. What's the point of protesting someone making sure isn't drowning? It's times like this that she wishes she had had more time with Leia, more time to just allow herself to be open to being cared about what something so simple wouldn't immediately cause so much suspicion and a desire to push people away.

She's working on it, she really is, but there are times when learned reactions just take precedent. But she won't apologize for it this time, not when she's already done it once and he's given her enough of a hint that he understands.]

You said something about a break?

( Ah. McCoy looks at her keenly, and he gets it, he truly does, moving right along with her. )

I did. Thought we could investigate the spread that Rosi put out.

( He throws a hand back toward the beach, roughly at the tables laden with treats, and moves to stand, offering her a hand up if she needs it. )

If you're ready.
garbagepilot: (When every one of them)

[She doesn't need it. She absolutely does not need anyone to help her stand up whether it's because she's just been thrown through the air because of an explosion from an air raid or because she's floating in water, but as stubborn as she is she has learned that it isn't always about what she needs.

Some people, like Finn and now Bones, are just kind. Not everyone is out for themselves and not everyone expects to be repaid for a simple hand up.

And so she puts her hand in his, lets him help her.]

I promise to mind my manners this time.

[Less eating with her hands like a savage, she promises.]

( Her small hand gets a brief, gentle squeeze in his, then he lets her go. )

You sure? I'll hold you to it, ( McCoy teases, knowing full well from his earlier perusal that there's mostly finger foods to be had. Back on the beach, he stands for a second, dripping in shorts that hide next to nothing- but are at least dark, unlike Rey's whites -and mildly regrets not circling back to his quarters much earlier to grab a swimsuit. )

Hold on.

( It's second nature by now, putting the image in the forefront of his mind, and allowing the simulation to respond, letting him essentially pull two beach towels from the ether. )
garbagepilot: (Quite the keeper of you)

Impressive.

[Does she mean the package or the magic trick? She's only reaching out for one of the two, feeling the chill of evaporating false water on her skin causing her to break into goosebumps that are certainly noticeable in all her white-clad glory, but if she notices it isn't clear. She doesn't seem to care if she does notice but being cold is never a thing she enjoys.]
