MISSION: 4:50 TO VREFESEA

M I S S I O N   6 . 0

INTROFAR TO GOBLOOD ON THE LINEA WORD FROM OUR SPONSORSFYI

// INTRO. STAY ON TRACK

This time, after a mission well executed, the weeks spent on the station might feel more restful than they have before before — but whatever the case, and whatever any orber might be occupied with, it is near midday when they all receive a file titled Steamhallow Express. The name might make you guess what the mission will be about before you even open it, but as always, Viveca’s familiar voice accompanies the file’s arrival shortly after.

// VIVECA.AI
Hi, everyone, hope you’ve had a good few weeks… and welcome to all new arrivals. I’ve sent everyone your next mission file. You’ll be taking a train from one city to another. I’ve located the orb to the city that is your final destination, Vrefesea, but it is an isolated city in the middle of the ocean, so you’ll have to get there like everyone else on the planet does: by the Steamhallow Express.

It’s an alien planet, but one without any magic, so those of you who have any abilities won’t have access to them during your time there. Don’t worry, you won’t suffer any side effects, it’ll be just like you’d never had any in the first place. Also, though the technology is rather advanced there, they don’t have any concept of robots or droids, so those of you will have to be masked with an illusion that gives you an organic appearance.

You’ll leave late tomorrow evening, so take this time to prepare — and remember, anything that is magic won’t work. That goes for items, weapons, anything.

The news may come as something of a shock and concern to some, and many will have to make some mental adjustments before the day of departure. Eventually the day turns to night, and then to morning, and time seems to move even slower still when evening approaches. Finally it’s hour one, and everyone on the team will arrive at the teleportation platform — there, the little cleaning bot is furiously scrubbing at a stain left on the floor from their previous mission. Beside it, Viveca floats in her robot body, smiling at each Orber.

// VIVECA.AI
I think at this point, you all know what to do. This mission will be a short one, I believe, so I expect to see you back here in a week or two, at most, depending how quickly you find the orb in Vrefesea. Good luck, everyone.

The loud hum of the teleportation machine is a comforting sound to some by this point… and if it isn’t, well, not to worry — soon, you’ll feel a tug somewhere behind your stomach, and the machine pulls you away, and it won’t matter anyway.

Yet again for a heartbeat, you simply hang there waiting… and then: the chorus of voices speaks and whispers in your ears the goal you must complete in exchange for the power waiting for you —

Without any time to answer, you open your eyes to the loud ambience of excitable chatter and the bustle of commuters moving to and fro within the busy terminal. Welcome to Craemore.

// PART I.FAR TO GO

The Craemore Terminal spreads in all directions around you: its glass ceiling filters multi-coloured light from the outside, filling the entire, large hall with a beautiful, almost ethereal glow. A giant, mechanical clock in the middle of the Terminal chimes with a strange melody, signifying that it is 2:30 — and, according to the sign that shows the arrivals and departures, the Steamhallow Express departs from platform 338 at 4:50.

1.0   What this means of course is that there is plenty of time to visit the ticket office to reclaim your punchcard, and maybe even pop into some of the stores before finding your way to the right platform. There are stores selling food and drinks if you’re feeling peckish, and some clothing and accessories stores for those who want to make sure they arrive at Vrefesea looking their best — and maybe also for those who want to make sure they fit in with the locals…

2.0   At the platform, some might witness a varied group of alien-looking passengers, all well dressed, the youngest girl still being a teenager and the eldest looking somewhere between his mid-to-late 30s by human standards. Some of them look more alike than others, and their loud exclamations carry over to where you’re covertly listening to them.

ODEN
Jove, is that really you? Never thought you’d get this big, I remember you when you were a little crofpole! It’s good to see you, brother. And you, Luna, it’s been too long.

TERRA
Wait, you’re Luna? Little Luna? I last saw you when you were a baby! Remember that, Helios? A nice break away from our studies, that was!

HELIOS
Yes, you were all too happy to skip a week of school. Sometimes I wonder why our parents didn’t send us all to the same school… it wouldn’t have taken so long to meet, then.

GOLDIE
Please, don’t blame Mama and Papa… you know they did the best they could, with their travels and all. We could have kept in touch better once we graduated, but…

LUNA
Hey, I haven’t even graduated yet!

GOLDIE
I know, sweetie. I’m just sorry Mama won’t be there for your graduation… but all of us will definitely be.

MARSHALL
Yes, we will. But let us face the facts: Mother is dead. She wants us to go to Vrefesea, so go we shall. Let’s take this as an opportunity to connect with each other after all this time.

JOVE
Well said! Let’s find our cars, we have plenty of time to chat aboard the train.

As they grab their bags and head towards the train, you realize it may be an opportune chance to follow a little ways behind … or maybe you’ll hang around on the platform for a while longer anyway, waiting for your fellow Orbers to arrive and board the train together with them.

3.0   Once inside the train, it is impossible to notice just how big it is: 120 cars in length, there is something for everyone: for the hungry, there are several cars lined with tables draped in silken cloths to cover them, servers in fancy suits delivering the highest-quality foods and beverages to you and your dining companions while a lounge singer croons a sweet tune in the corner of the room. Some cars are dedicated solely to dancing: the performers there have a larger stage to perform on, decked in velvety curtains and sparkling spotlights; and the floor, polished and shining, invites listeners to spend their night — or day — dancing it away. There are even cars for those looking for a little excitement in the form of games: the world’s version of pool, played with mechanical sticks and where the talent lies in being able to adjust the springs at just the right moment before a hit — easy enough to learn but difficult to master. There are also numerous card games played on decks that have different figures instead of single numbers and can be picked up through observing a couple of games beforehand. No matter your preference of entertainment, it shouldn’t be hard to find something to do.

And when you want to retire for the day — well, whether it’s a luxury cabin with a king-size bed, an armchair and even a little bookshelf of your own, or it’s one of the more worn-down cabins that you’ll share with anywhere from one to three other passengers … it all comes down to your luck and what level of punchcard you’ve been dealt. But there’s no need to despair if you’re one of the people with the cheapest ticket: you may have a friend staying in one of the better cabins that you can bunk with … or maybe you’ll get lucky and find an empty cabin whose lock you can pick to claim it for yourself. Just, you know, make sure you don’t get caught …

… especially when you see Valacar Pinot walk past in his bright shirt — because, harmless and sweet as the man may seem, you overhear him speaking with Helios Day:

HELIOS
Detective Pinot, what a surprise. What brings such a renowned man to Vrefesea? Business or pleasure?

VAL
A bit of both, a bit of both! Mr. Day, isn’t it? Might I have seen more of your family here? How intriguing — I never knew Felix and Hortensia had such a big family.

HELIOS
Yes, indeed. You see, Mother and Father worked all over the cities and outside them, so they sent us all to whatever boarding school was nearest to their work at the time… so really, most of us haven’t seen each other for over a decade.

VAL
Really? Well, it must’ve been your mother’s final wish to bring you all together again… my condolences for her passing.

Pinot and Helios walk away, chatting still, their voices growing fainter, but leaving you at least a little bit wiser — there’s a detective on board now, so being on your guard is not a bad idea.

// PART II.BLOOD ON THE LINE

You may be fast asleep in your designated car, or you might be having a quick night-cap or midnight snack in the dining car when you suddenly hear the screams. Dragged from your night activity, whatever that may be, you’ll shuffle out in your night-clothes (or your clothes from that day) and find some of the Day family looking utterly distraught. Luna is crouched by the corridor of the car, her arms around her knees, expression frozen in shock as Marshall hovers around her, looking gaunt. Goldie is in tears, making attempts to speak through the sobs wracking her small frame while Pinot in his loud-patterned robe tries to console her through awkward pats and equally awkward There, theres.

GOLDIE
I found him like that, me and — and Oden.We were about to say our goodnights, we hadn’t met each other before and we’d lost track of time, and just as we were about to go to our separate cabins, Oden calls out to me, “Jove! Jove!” I have never heard such a cry before! When I saw the body — oh, there was so much blood! I don’t know who would do such a thing! And why? Please, Detective, please do something!

4.0   If you decide to investigate a little closer, you’ll find Oden standing right by the door, arms hugging his chest. He looks like he’s about to be sick as he stares at the lifeless body of his brother, Jove, lying sprawled over the carpeted floor of their shared car. Jove’s condition is grim. Without touching the body, you might notice that beyond the blood-soaked robe of his night clothing, there are a series of stab wounds just under his ribs, each stab just a little more careful than the last. There is a crumpled up letter squeezed between the fingers of one hand, bits of broken wax seal under them. The other looks dirty with blood caught beneath the nails, the tips broken from struggle. The rest of the room seems untouched, a small box of toiletries in one corner, next to a lamplight, and a set of neatly folded clothes. It’s as though Jove hadn’t even had the chance to settle in for the night before his attack.

This is confirmed by Oden, who, turning to a pale Terra, says:

ODEN
If only I’d gone with him when he decided to turn in for the night…but Goldie and I stayed up talking and didn’t even notice how late it had got. I should have been there with him…!

TERRA
It’s not your fault, Oden. But seeing him like that… it’s almost like when he fell out of Dad’s study window as a kid, remember? But he — he was fine, then. I keep expecting him to laugh and get up —

She trails off with a choked sob, Helios stepping closer to wrap her in a hug.

Indeed, all the Day family are present and they all look some form of shocked and upset, which isn’t a surprise considering one of their siblings has been so brutally murdered. You might try and speak with one of them or have a look around the car — but be respectful, of course. A murder has just happened.

// PART III.A WORD FROM OUR SPONSORS

You can hear the way the Steamhallow Express slows to a halt, pulling in to a station much smaller than the one you just came from, the rhythmic chugga chugga coming to a stop. The mood is solemn and everyone aboard the train is still silent, keeping to themselves in light of last night’s events. A horror, really, you hear Terra whisper to her brother Helios, and from across the car, Luna and Marshall nod their heads in agreement. They look as though they haven’t slept a wink, faces waxy and wane, the circles under their eyes darker than they should be.

If you look out the window, you’ll see craggy rust-coloured rockfaces surround you that cast a warm shadow over the train. But just past the edge of the station platform is a metal-grated pathway leading directly into a cluster of individual buildings made of wood and steel and packed mud, and strings of colourful flags overhead flapping in the pleasant, cool breeze overhead. The sun overhead is bright and ever so inviting, reflecting off of the white walls and orange-red roofs. This is the trading city known as Qririe Cliffs, an in-between place that feels more old-school than any other location on Novis Nox.

5.0   Before any of the passengers, including you, are allowed to leave the confines of the train, a voice comes over the speakers in a tinny deep boom. The conductor’s voice is just a little too cheerful, given what you all remember transpired — but that’s just his job.

“Good afternoon everyone, this is your conductor speaking, we have been instructed to remain within the train for just a moment longer. No one is to gather their things, but most importantly we are all to remain calm. Given recent events, we have been informed that the Qririe Cliff’s fine authorities are on their way to speak with some of our passengers and gather information to share with the right folks when we reach our final destination in Vrefesea.

But until then there are still beverages and food in the dining cart, and why not catch up on your reading? Let us know if you require any assistance and a steward will be along shortly to help. Thank you, and we hope you choose to ride with us on the Steamhallow Express again in the future.”

The engines have now fully stopped with an exhale, and the voices of your fellow passengers and crew-members of the Ximilia sound louder than ever now, amplified in the silence. You might find you’ll need this moment to recount the events of last night alone, or find someone to speak with, to reassure yourselves that what happened really did happen. Perhaps some of you will take it upon yourselves to get to the bottom of what happened now that it’s daylight. Whatever the case may be, you don’t have much time.

6.0   In what feels like forever and yet no time at all, there is a loud banging from the outside of one of the cars, followed by a hollow, “Open up! It’s the QCPD,” as the authorities have finally arrived. That figure sitting by himself, arms folded across his chest, begins to straighten, scratching at his chin. The deep purple of his eyes blinks once, twice, and then he lets out a sigh.

Well, it’s about time, boys. I’ve got a train to catch, after all!” he says, and you watch as Detective Pinot pushes through the crowd to get to the door, pushing it forward to reveal an organic with bright pink skin peering into the car. Pinot laughs at his own joke as the officer removes their hat and takes a few steps up to enter. And then the blue-skinned detective immediately gestures with a hand towards the cars towards the back. You might decide to follow them if you’re curious, but there isn’t much of a point before Pinot and the officer disappear into the crime scene, shutting the door and making it clear that this is now official business. Occasionally the detective will poke his head out and a couple of the Day family will be ushered in to clear up some of the details and to build the case. Some of the other passengers follow suit for witness statements.

It feels like hours have passed before the officers and the detective re-emerge. With solemn steps, they approach the car where most of the Ximilia crew (and some of the Steamhallow’s other passengers) have gathered. Detective Pinot remains silent — thoughtful and serious, which contrasts greatly to the print of a colourful deck of cards adorning his button-down shirt today — before the QCPD point in the directions of Clara Oswald and Peter Quill, and call their names out. A small folded sheet of paper, torn at one end, is held in the hand of one of the officers. There are a few gasps in the car as all eyes turn to Clara and Peter — or you.

Before anyone can react, the pink-skinned officer, joined by their partner, steps forward to detain the suspects in question. If it’s you they’ve arrested, it’s best to go quietly while the rest of your fellow crew members try and quickly sort this whole mess out. If you’re watching your friends being escorted off of the train, you still have some time to quickly try and investigate the crime scene now that the light is better. Pinot appears to be thinking the same thing, hanging back for a moment.

What you do with this limited time is up to you — what will you do next?

7.0   You might be a little shaken, but there is simply nothing anyone can do at the moment. Pinot might assure you that your friends aren't being imprisoned, and as long as the facts line up, the truth will come out in the end, and Clara and Peter will have their names cleared soon enough. He encourages you to go into the city for a couple of hours and lets you know that there are items here you’ll probably never see in Vrefesea or Craemore. It’s worth a look at least, isn’t it?

If you do decide to go into the city, you’ll find that the energy here is cheerful and bright and freeing. The people of this city have their wares out, spread across blankets and set up in tiny shops. Some of these items include: pottery, jewelry, small trinkets, collectibles, statuettes and prayer sculptures. There are more higher-tech items as well: gadgets and unfinished inventions, household appliances and even some small weapons. Some shops can barely fit more than two or three customers at a time; others are more like stalls with items set up under the shade of an awning. There is music in the little square and people are dancing — if they aren’t hanging out by the outdoor tables, enjoying delicious sweet and savoury foods and drinks. Something colourful and effervescent swirls in one woman’s glass; and a younger organic with bright green skin slurps up at what anyone from Earth might recognize as a frozen popsicle (or something very much like it). You might eventually see some of the Day family there too, Luna and Oden walking past you, and Terra by the edge of the waterside, solemnly watching the waves and the horizon.

You might nearly bump into Goldie Day who dips her head and apologizes, and then shuffles off towards an alleyway nestled between buildings, eyes glassy with unshed tears.

You’ll remember that the Steamhallow Express is set to disembark for Vrefesea by the evening, and hope that your fellow crew members are released from questioning, but you’ll want to make your way back to the train when the sun looks to be setting and people slowly begin to gather their wares back up for the night. There is still music and dancing and the lights from within buildings start to glow, lighting up the town in a different way — it’s beautiful, really, despite the events on the train — but this short reprieve must come to an end.

That evening, the Steamhallow Express leaves once more for Vrefesea. It will become more important than ever for the team to pull the information they’ve gathered together, whether through investigations on their own or speaking with Detective Pinot who seems surprisingly amenable to working this case with you. It might be the eagerness in your ambition, or the fact that he’s never had any kind of partner or team to work with before.

Or perhaps you want to investigate the dead man a little closer: kept in its own car separate from the main passenger baggage (something about the presence of mind, and perhaps the smell), Jove’s body is to be kept in some form of stasis before it’s transported to Vrefesea for an autopsy and investigation in another 36 or so hours.

There’s no guarantee that the body will be so easily accessible, however, and those of you more determined to get down to the truth might need to cause a distraction of sorts to gain access into the otherwise locked room.

[Natasha and Quill had a similar line of thought when it comes to keeping an eye on the other passengers. People are going to congregate here. It's the most exposure. The most opportunity to get a sense of people's personaities and the dynamics between them.

Even seeing who didn't put in an appearance told you something about them, didn't it.

She recognizes Quill when he joins her, offering an automatic smile.]

Oh, it's my first time. Never been this far from home before.

[Far be it from Natasha not to play along with a cover, or to pass up the opportunity to communicate on different leaves.]

But you strike me as well-traveled.
spacedisaster: (I mustache you a question)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2022-05-08 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Peter might look and act like an idiot most of the time, but it is more often than not an act to get people to underestimate him. While he isn't book smart - you don't get much of an education when a bunch of space pirates kidnaps you at the sweet age of 8 years old- he tries to make good use of the things he does know how to do, like reading people.

As to not make himself too obvious, breaks every now and then are required. And what better to do than talk to a friend and exchange impressions? He gives Natasha a nod, going along with the double meanings. ]

It can be a lot at first, so it's better to take it easy. One day at a time. And yes, I'm a seasoned traveler by now, but my first time was also rocky. Perhaps because I started traveling really young and with too many strangers.

[ He pauses briefly when his drink if left in front of him. Peter murmurs a 'thank you', winks at the alien bartender, and then turns back towards Natasha as he takes a sip. ]

Lots of lovely and interesting people to meet here, though. It's such a big train. Almost too big, it makes seeing all of it tricky. [ And finding where the orb could be located even more. ]
deaddrop: (pic#15038464)

[personal profile] deaddrop 2022-05-09 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
[Natasha sets her own drink down, toying with the glass between two fingers as she nods along with Peter's answer.

She knows a little about travelling too young and with strangers.

Not something she intends to unpack now, though. Among other things, there are bigger priorities at hand.]

I figure I'll get the hang of it fairly quickly. Especially since not everyone is a stranger.

[Her smile turns up slightly higher, though it doesn't quite reach her eyes.]

And taking it easy isn't my way.
spacedisaster: (Oh hello there ~)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2022-05-29 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ Some months ago, both thanks to talking to Yelena and witnessing her memories due to dream sharing, he learned more than he ever wanted to know about how the red room operates. It's not something he would ask her about n public, or ask her at all, actually, far too aware that is very personal.

What he saw also reminded him of the kind of suffering Gamora and Nebula went through while being raised by Thanos, and it made him sick to his stomach. He takes another sip of the drink and tries to focus on the mission at hand, lest his emotions get the best of him. ]

He, there's that too. I'm here with my lovely girlfriend, we're going to Vrefsea for some new gigs. We've heard plenty of interesting things about the city and especially the Museum. Taking it easy is boring, I'll give you that.
deaddrop: (pic#13347553)

[personal profile] deaddrop 2022-05-29 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you don't strike me as the feet up kind of guy. I think I saw you dancing earlier?

[Natasha takes a sip of her drink, leaning against the bar as she gives him a sideways look.

One brow cocking at an interested angle.

They'll call that dancing.]

Actually, I was wondering about the mission. About the goals.
spacedisaster: (Oh hello there ~)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2022-05-29 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I have an aversion to staying still. Too boring for my taste. And yes, I was. Why, would you like a dance?

[ Peter grins, playful. If there's music, he feels like dancing, it's inevitable. even if the quality of said dancing might vary. ]

Of course. Do tell? Any questions? Mine sucks this time, so I am not bothering with it.
deaddrop: (paraplectanoides crassipes)

[personal profile] deaddrop 2022-05-29 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Do you think you could keep up with me?

[Natasha asks that archly. The challenge is mostly joking, but there might be the feeling she doesn't take the prospect of a dance lightly.

The other point is more pressing anyway.]

So the sucking is a normal thing. That about covers half of it there. What was yours?
spacedisaster: (I don't think that's right)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2022-05-30 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a lot of stamina and I know some sick moves. At least let me try? Even if you kick my ass we can have fun.

[ Playful teasing aside, Peter hardly ever passes up an opportunity to dance as long as it doesn't hinder the mission at hand. But that can wait, of course. ]

Usually. The glowing balls of doom like to be challenging, they thrive on conflict. [ He doesn't say 'orbs' directly in case the wrong person overhears, but everyone seems to be preoccupied with their own affairs so far. ]

I was tasked with betraying a teammate. [ And at that, Peter frowns in annoyance. He is not someone who gets angry too easily, but a few things really get to him, and betrayal is one of them. He won't do it to anybody. ] Last mission, I had the goal of dancing my way out of an argument. I liked that one better.
deaddrop: (pic#13347555)

[personal profile] deaddrop 2022-05-31 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
So they're not all like that.

[That's useful to know. Though the fact that his goal involve betrayal very clearly underlines her misgivings—things like that aren't exactly going to include team cohesion.

How are they supposed to work together when one any given mission one of your teammates could have a fairly strong incentive to betray you?]

Mine is to harm someone. I'm on the fence just how worth it I think that is.

[Not that she doesn't want to undo her regret, but that's already happened.

On the other hand, harmed isn't exactly well defined. If she can fulfill it with a little discomfort, she'll consider it...

She is considering it.]

Think it would count if I step on your feet while we're dancing?
spacedisaster: (Curious)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2022-06-12 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Thankfully not. I think that the difficulty of the task they give us pretty much depends on the kind of person we are.. Some people get goals that might seem easy like 'sing a song' , 'share a good memory' or 'tell a joke', yet it can be really difficult for them to do so.

[ Not everyone is a clown like him, or good at opening up. Peter has his own lines in the sand that he won't cross as well, like the aforementioned betrayal of a teammate. He pauses for a moment, and takes another sip of his drink while thinking about Natasha's goal. ]

Does it need to cause emotional or physical harm? If it's the latter, sometimes it can be as simple as slapping one of the orbers, or pulling at their ears. [ Things that might hurt but won't leave anyone with lasting damage, just like her suggestion. Peter actually laughs at that. ]

We could try, for the sake of the goal. I had worse injuries in the past. Or you could hit me harder, I'm tougher than I look. [ There's a pause before he adds; ] You are like Sam and me, right? Regular ol' humans? No super strength or secret metal leg that might leave limping for a week, I hope? Gamora’s  was cybernetically enhanced with alien tech, she could even lift machinery as big as a car without breaking a sweat, but it was hard to tell just looking at her.
deaddrop: (pic#15124025)

[personal profile] deaddrop 2022-06-14 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no super strength. No metal limbs. If I'm stronger than I look, it's mostly because people don't expect someone who looks like me to be especially strong.

[That might be underselling herself. Natasha isn't one to come out and say exactly how strong she is.

It's better to keep some of that close to her vest. Not only that, she doesn't want to oversell anything.

She's still a very squishy mortal human and she works with gods and science experiments.]

I like to think it's not the only thing I bring to a team though.

[She does have a particular skill set. That said...]

You're not really offering, are you? I appreciate it, but I'm not sure it's a great idea throwing around suggestions like that.
spacedisaster: (Aren't you cute when you lie to me?)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2022-06-14 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
I believed you, I've seen your sister in action. [ Peter might not know a lot about ex-widows, but he knows you don't want to piss off one if you value your life. ] And catching people off guard because they underestimate you is a good and legit tactic.

[ He uses it plenty too, although in a different way than her, so he can totally relate. In fact, that answer got him to smile. And as far as Peter's concerned, Gods can be killed too, with enough determination. And sometimes bombs. ]

I do mean that. [ Peter answers, somewhat more seriously this time. ] I don't mind. People have kicked me for worse reasons.

[ Like Yondu and the other Ravagers, whose idea of teaching Peter to fight was to beat him up on the regular. I did help him build a tolerance for pain. ]

I know how important some goals are for some people. [ More some for people like Natasha, who probably need to get their life back. ] We just need to decide how to do it.
deaddrop: (pic#15124031)

[personal profile] deaddrop 2022-06-19 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
It does seem like it would be a shame to pass on the chance. I'm not saying I'd do anything to achieve a goal...

[Natasha shrugs, a little rueful. She's good on a mission, but it's not worth everything.

On the other hand, her regret is a fairly serious one. Not something she's about to open up to.]

If you're volunteering though... we'll see what opportunities you give me. After a dance?
spacedisaster: (Soft smile | Heart eyes ♥_♥)

[personal profile] spacedisaster 2022-06-19 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.

[ Peter has discovered, after almost a year of living in the Ximlia, that he can only trust a handful of people not to take extreme measures to get the orbs or accomplish a goal. He doesn't blame them, but he is also careful.

He smiles at Natasha, nodding. It's just pain, he can deal. Peter finishes his drink and then tilts his head towards the dance floor. ]

Shall we, miss...?
deaddrop: (pic#15038425)

[personal profile] deaddrop 2022-06-22 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Let's shall.

[Natasha hops down from her stool, offering her arm toward the dance floor.

Honestly, who's she to turn down a dance? It's not like she gets a whole lot of opportunity to dance.

Even if she can't quite relax.]
spacedisaster: (Overthinking)

[ Linking their arms, looking as natural as they can, Peter leads them to the dance floor. He likes all sorts of music, even if, in his experience, most of the tunes aliens races had developed lack a little punch.

The song playing on the train veers more toward the classic, and he holds one of Natasha's hands while placing the other on the curve of her hip. He tries not to think too hard about how the last time this happened, it was with Gamora. He figures that Natasha will let him know if she's uncomfortable. ]

[It's fairly hard to make Natasha uncomfortable, and if she were, she doesn't have a problem enforcing her boundaries.

She moves with him easily, light on her feet as she finds a rhythm to sway to the music. She doesn't drift too close, but her hand rests easily on his shoulder.

He's not a bad dancing partner, not that this is anything too fancy.]

[ That's good to know. Despite Peter's being loud, both in personality and voice, he doesn't like to make people upset on purpose. It's easy to fall into a rhythm with Natasha, maybe because she is not trying to act as if she's not enjoying herself like Gamora used to do at first. ]

I hope this isn't too terrible for a first mission. We've had weird ones in the past. Had I mentioned that we once lived in a castle that was alive? And that wasn't even the strangest part.

[ He looks around briefly, trying to see if there's anyone giving them curious looks, but it seems like they are selling the 'normal couple dancing' shtick just fine. ]

Back then, I still had some faith that we were changing things for the better. [ Now he isn't sure anymore, but he can't voice those concerns while at the station because Peer is sure that Viveca can hear everything they say or share. ]

Aside from the aliens, this is fairly normal so far. A mission like this back home would be my bread and butter.

[Even a bit below her pay grade, though considering the nature of the item they were looking for... well, that's a little in her purview these days.

Natasha falls into step with him easily. She has natural rhythm, and he seems to know what he's doing.]

A living castle, huh? I haven't heard about that one.

[Or not that detail. The bits and pieces of missions she's heard have been... incomplete.

She's still going back through the files on past missions.]

How'd that turn out?

Really? Since I got to know the others a little better, I've been curious about what your team was like back home. Earth heroes. I bet you even had merch made about you. Were there toys? [ Peter smiles, easily moving with her around the dance floor. She's good at dancing too, so it's not hard to enjoy the dance. His expression falters for a moment. ] Tony was at the station for a while as well.

[ They had fought and argued like cats and dogs when they first met in their universe, but Peter grew fond of him once they had the chance to get to know each other better. And now he was gone again. ]

Oh, it was like living in a fairy tale. There was a sleeping princess, magic rooms, a hedge maze... No dragon, but we found a moat with a giant dinosaur-like creature in it. It was shy at first, but we befriended it and named it Nessie. [ It helped nothing to find the orb, but it was cute and one of the few fond memories Peter has of that mission. ]

The problem was that, while in the castle, we could fall prey to a deep sleep that made us revive some of our most important or painful memories. Those who fell asleep could dream walk into each other's dreamscapes, usually by accident, and see those memories. [ Peter had seen a lot of unpleasant and heartbreaking things, and it gave him a lot of insight about certain orbers. The memories also broke his heart. His tone is careful when he adds; ] I saw Yelena's past.

Well, this would be more like my solo work. Though sometimes the Avengers manage to be subtle.

[Unfortunately, most of the team outside of Natasha and Clint are about as subtle as a repulsor blast to the face.]

Most of us have jobs and lives outside of the team, to one degree or another.

[Lives might be a little generous, especially in Natasha's case. But she works for the Avengers, and sometimes... well, she works a lot.]

There were toys, though. Action figures.

[Her nose wrinkles a little. It's uncomfortable. She's doesn't exactly see herself as a role model, but if some girls benefit from having it... she won't say that's bad.

Yelena wouldn't be so conflicted.

Speaking of which.]

I suppose it's too much to hope for that you saw Ohio.

That truly is a feat. My team can't manage subtle even when we are being paid for it. Missions usually start normally and then...explosions. Or Drax stabbing someone's arm, Rocket stealing valuable shit because he has sticky fingers. Once, Mantis got lost twice in a marketplace. But we always finish our missions.

[ They do their job, it's just that it never goes as planned. Never a dull day with the Guardians of the Galaxy. ]

You're more than co-workers and part-time heroes? I bet that you all fight less that way. We, Guardians, live together.

[ And Peter wouldn't give that up for anything, despite his mild complaints. He could go without Drax's snoring at night, though. He chuckles at the mention of toys and her annoyed reaction. It's cute, sorry Natasha. ]

That means people really admire you all. [ As embarrassing as it might be, being a good role model compensates for that. ]

Yelena told me about Ohio during our first mission in Braccia, we were acting as a couple. But no, I saw what happened after that. I'm sorry, I promise I didn't want to pry, and I haven't told anyone else.

Some of us more part-time than others. And some of us closer than others.

[Natasha doesn't care for the characterization of co-workers. For her, they weren't. In the end, they were one of the closest things she ever got to a family.

But that's not something that's easy to explain, and she can't say she thinks Thor feels the same way about Tony, or that Bruce and Steve are especially close.]

But don't worry, we're very good at fighting each other. Sometimes a little too good.

[It's bound to happen with so many big personalities and strong convictions.]

It's a long way from what you saw, what happened in the Red Room.

That's good. We all need people we can trust in our lives. Even if it's difficult.

[ Talking from experience here. The concept of a family of choice is one Peter's well acquainted with, though, and one that he fully supports. ]

Look on the bright side of things. Probably none of your teammates ever considered biting you as a reasonable way to finish an argument. Rocket does that. [ Then again, the Avengers have Banner-Hulk on their side. Peter doesn't want to think about how a fight with him might escalate. ]

Yes, I know. And I also know that their past doesn't define a person.

[ It does leave marks and scars, but those are personal issues one has to deal with. While they're nothing like what Yelena and Natasha had to deal with, he too is fighting his own demons in the shape of genocidal purple aliens and celestial fathers. ]

So...feeling like stepping on my foot yet? Or punch me? For Natasha's goal, he means. Peter did offer to take the brunt of it.

I did work with Rocket for five years. I think I have a pretty good basis for comparison.

[She sounds amused as she says it. She wouldn't believe she'd have missed him, considering he's abrasive, rude, and more likely to steal things than most of her original teammates.]

Honestly, he might be an honorary Avenger at this point. Him and Nebula.

[Isn't that fun crossover. But it does seem fair to say those two were part of both teams, at least for a while there.

As for the last part, Natasha admits.]

I was thinking about it. Seemed like a shame to end the dance too early, but... it's about that time, isn't it?
