（ sure hope jim woke up this morning expecting to see genuine surprise on a ninja's face, because if not then that brief there-and-gone flicker might be just fast enough to miss.

it shouldn't surprise him, really. they are, after all, on a space station. he has accepted that readily enough. yet, he bypasses those other interesting tidbits of knowledge and focuses on — ）

A starship?

（ the faint lilt to his voice makes it more than just a question, it is an interest. ）

[ No, he didn't wake up expecting that, but then he didn't wake up expecting to meet a ninja at all. It is still an unusual reaction, and even if he hadn't noticed the surprise (which he did), he definitely picks up on the interest in his tone.

His lips curl into a wider, warmer smile. He simply nods, taking a tentative sip from his hot cup. ]

Yes. Are you familiar with the concept?

[ It's a genuine question, having met a number of people here who have no idea what he means by it. It sounds like Itachi knows what it is, but still. ]

（ but he is, as they say, a quick study. like the dinosaurs andy had mentioned that so captured his attention, he is intrigued by the concept of space. how many nights did he spend by the nakano river, looking up at that dark expanse, his head cushioned on shisui's legs or vice-versa, in the casual unselfconscious manner of childhood friends? they had spoken on what might exist past the view of their sharingan, but only shisui had the imagination for it. ）

Does it bear resemblance to the Ximilia beyond the cursory?

（ by which he means, closed-hull, plain walls, etc. ）

[ It may be a reality in Jim's time, but it's true that Mankind has spent centuries, even millennia, dreaming and wondering about what it would be like to travel to the stars, so Itachi's not alone there. Even in worlds, realities and times where space travel is such a distant, foreign concept, it's always a subject to fascinate the plenty. ]

In some things, yes. But it doesn't feel the same way. The Ximilia is a station, and the power source is different too; I always feel a different sort of vibration, here. But the Enterprise is equally modern, if not more so. We have equipment that this station doesn't have, and my crew is considerably larger too.

[ He pauses, then gestures at Itachi. ] If you want, I can show you one day. In the simulation room, I can show you my ship.

（ he's midway through lifting his tea when jim makes that offer, and there is a barely perceptible pause in the fluidity of his motion. every once in a while, the odd, overwhelming camaraderie of the people here catches him off guard. he has met no one who isn't willing to share their life, their time, their knowledge. bright little moments and things that they love, all willingly put on display for others to sift and sort through.

after spending a lifetime among shinobi, all of whom guard their secrets more dearly than death, it is a curious thing. he is still, unavoidably suspicious when it occurs — but then, no one here knows enough of him to understand why they should be wary.

he studies jim a moment, brief consternation between his brows, and then he sets his cup back gently down. ）

[ It's not like Jim is entirely unused to that surprise, or even the suspicion, so he doesn't take it to heart. He offers Itachi a small, quiet smile, then continues drinking his tea, of course giving him the choice to either reject the offer or just outright ignore it.

Generally speaking, though, people seem pretty interested in seeing the simulation, and he's glad when it's the same with Itachi. He does so love sharing a piece of his home with the people here, to show them how wonderful it all is. To him, anyway. ]

Great. I mean, we don't have to go now. Whatever works best for you.

[ It is pretty late, and maybe Itachi would rather go have some rest after their sparring session. ]

Another night, perhaps.

（ certainly not now. it isn't as if he lacks in curiosity — but his tolerance for company walks a razor thin line at the best of times, and although kirk's presence is not as obtrusive as some, he would still sooner return to his room and be alone than spend too much more time alongside him. ）

I think I will retire once we're finished here.

[ Whatever the reason, Jim doesn't pry, nor will he ever take offense whenever Itachi wants to make one of their meetings short. It has been pleasant so far, anyway. Both the sparring, and this quiet, peaceful conversation, getting to interact in more ways than just landing blows on one another.

Even if, he does realize, Itachi has learned more about him than the other way around. ]

Yeah, I think I will too. [ He smiles, sipping again from his tea. ] This was nice, though. Thank you for taking me up on it.

[ And also the simulation thing. And maybe pester Itachi on other occasions?? Too bad for Itachi that Jim is obnoxiously good at making friends. ]

and so it goes that the thread passes into legend, and these two guys sit around drinking tea in quiet, companionable silence until itachi inevitably makes like a ninja and escapes into the quiet night!! ）
