[ Fitting that Jake would be the one gripping on stubbornly just a few seconds longer, not yet fully allowing himself to relax into his friend's obvious sincerity. He'd strived to live his life in a way that allowed for the unobstructed float of people in his orbit; neither caging anyone nor being caged in return. Wanting to tether himself to another person wasn't a new desire in Jake's life, but it was a rare one. How could he know for sure if one friend, even in a life shrunk down to several dozen strangers, was worth changing for?

That's the trouble with desire, Jake thinks as he releases his grip on Yujin's shirt. Suffering couldn't exist without it, according to the books he'd read. And the thing is, Jake really did believe that.

But he also believed that, once in a long while, the joy gained made up for that suffering it took to get keep it. Even when that joy finds you in a world that doesn't belong to either of you; lost and chilly and staring back with a hurt you couldn't stand having put there. ]
