It is something Finn has to do for him, he thinks. In his mind, he should be doing everything he can to see Jim through this. But it's also something he wants to do. It's doubtful he'd be hugging just anyone while they slept like this. And it feels so special, being with him while he's so vulnerable, being trusted like this.
Maybe Finn's protectiveness is just that obvious, though.
He doesn't dare move while James rests, pretty certain that he's gotten little of it since this all began. And Finn doesn't plan on falling asleep, certainly feels too wired to do something like that, but James is warm and safe. Naturally, he eventually drifts off into a light sleep.
He stirs when Jim moves, his arms tightening a little more and a hum leaving him, like he's totally convincing in how awake he is. Or that's how Finn thinks of it, anyway. But he does know where they are, who he's holding, even while drifting like this.
