I've wondered what would happen if it wasn't recoverable. Clearest way I can imagine that happening is most of us winding up dead. If there's any luck at all, it's that we generally don't lose anyone.

[People have disappeared, though. Whether the orb sent them home or elsewhere, or whether they died on a mission, he's not sure. None of them have been anyone he was close to, and he's never witnessed the deaths of any of the crew himself. It has probably happened, he figures - but not in great numbers.]
