MISSION: BAD COMPANY, PART 2

M I S S I O N   4 . 2

INTROTHE DREAM DEFERREDYOUR WAKE UP CALLFYI

// INTRO. WELFORD BRANSON

It is barely past twilight in Scorpion’s Bend, the twin suns having just set, taking their light with them — but the moons delay, and so darkness lingers over the town as Lan Xichen’s conversation with one Welford Branson comes to an abrupt end. At the same time, all around the town, the team will notice the town natives around them stilling — some freezing in the middle of a sentence, a man with a fork in the air, a woman mid-step on the street, some youngsters with their mouths open in laughter. All of them become statues in less than a heartbeat; still, eyes vacant, like everything that made them seem alive has been taken away.

And then — a reverberating sigh, echoing heavily in the ears of all the Orbers. What follows are words, spoken by a chorusing voice now familiar to most of the team —

Well now you’ve done it.

The orb’s echoing sound is filled with disappointment, even annoyance.

Some may see that amidst all the frozen townspeople, an old man runs, clawing at his thinning hair. Some of you may hear his words, muttered, desperate:

I don't understand, I thought 'twas just a bad dream, everyone was fine, don't understand, what in the name of the Eight could've done somethin' like this —”

The disbelieving mumbles trail at his wake, making it clear he does not know what is going on at all — in fact, you may have a better idea as to what has happened than he does. But as you turn to follow him, open your mouth to yell at him to stop... everything around you shatters.

The lights in the buildings grow dim and break; the smell of food disappears; the horses in the stables simply fade away. You notice that if you were wearing or carrying something you bought while here, it too disappears, your clothes turning to those you had on upon arrival, all equipment shimmering away slowly.

But perhaps most importantly… the frozen statues of people crumble into ash right in front of you. It may fill the floors of the now-silent, dusty and worn-down houses, or it may blow away with the harsh desert wind — whichever it is, sans the team, the town of Scorpion’s Bend is now devoid of people.

TOP

// PART I.THE DREAM DEFERRED

The town that now surrounds the team is very different from the one it used to be — the houses are quiet, filled with sand and dust; doors broken, tables turned over, drawers open and mostly empty, aside from anything not valuable. The beds in Thornbush Inn are ragged, insects of various sizes skittering along the floors. The Saloon is dusty, furniture broken, and a lone piano stands in the corner, half its keys having crumbled away. The door to the Mayor’s office is ajar, a banging sound repeating as it hits the wall in time with the wind.

1.0   In the corners of the Sheriff’s office, the school and the church, the embera slither along, searching for food; owl-shrews hide from the Orbers on the streets, while feathered coyotes howl at the five moons now lending their light to see the town’s destruction better. The team may be the only living humanoids, but they are not the only living beings in the town anymore; in the absence of people, animals have made the town their home. And coexist they must, now, to survive the rapidly dropping temperature of the night that has fallen upon them.

2.0   The next morning, as the moons disappear underneath the horizon and let the two suns bring out their scorching rays once more, the team wakes up to the reality of having to survive Scorpion’s Bend… with very little supplies. So search the empty houses, for they still stand; the fire that has burned away the people has not touched the buildings… but they have not been immune to the passing of time, or the harsh weather in the desert. You may find clothing, basic equipment, pots and pans left on a now-cold stove; but no valuables, no money, no gems, no jewelry, no weapons.

But amidst your search through the town, remember that what you need, first and foremost, is to find water and something to eat — it will not be long until the suns are high in the sky, and some of you are already in desperate need of proper nourishment, without being left to endure the scorching temperatures the days on the planet of Badrock bring.

3.0   But should you want to brave the heat, you’ll find it is now possible to leave the town and venture out into the desert. Out there, the rock dragons search for prey, while bald vultures circle above your head in groups of three or four, their shrieks growing in volume the farther you walk. If you show weakness, any weakness, they strike — and the dragons, sensing their chance, are not far behind.

And when you least expect it, the ground underneath you trembles, like a small earthquake is approaching you… and then you see it: from the sand, a whale surges up, then another, and another, arcing through the air like suspended there, before the sand swallows them once more. Should you get too close, you too may be swallowed underneath the sand; unless you’re very, very careful, or have in your arsenal something else that may help you to deal with these near-immortal giants that have swam across the deserts for hundreds of thousands of years.

// PART II.YOUR WAKE UP CALL

Time passes at a snail’s pace without the comforts of the town you were used to. Scorpion’s Bend is now a wasteland you must survive, and it clearly isn’t easy. Some of you might question whether retrieving the orb is still an endeavour worth pursuing after all of this, but the rest of you know that it is. That you’ve come this far and you’re nearly there; you just need to band together and form a gameplan.

As the suns begin to set over the horizon on yet another grueling day of scorching heat and rough, dry sand in the ghost town of Scorpion’s Bend, you might begin to hear a distant thunder that has nothing to do with an oncoming desert storm or otherwise. It rattles at the already weakened structures of the old Saloon and the General Store, bits of broken glass and debris vibrating with the raucous sound of clattering hooves, feet, and paws. And as the sound of the invasion grows louder – you’ll hear the unmistakable manic howling and bellowing in accompaniment: these are the Bouldersnakes that some of you have already heard much of.

4.0   The Bouldersnakes are not a group to be taken lightly, and have garnered the fearsome reputation that they now hold for a reason. Kicking up dust, they arrive like a cloud of chaos in different sizes, shapes, and forms. Some have the ability to shrink and grow in size to match their opponents in physical size and weight. Other Bouldersnakes are agile and quick; and others yet are superhumanly strong and robust – either way, they make for formidable opponents when you, yourself, have been weakened from weeks of a lack of proper nutrition and sleep. The individual members of the Bouldersnakes are like a band of bloodthirsty brothers: from all walks of life and all colours and creeds, with a severe and mean streak to them, who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals.

What goals, you ask? Should you listen carefully, their leader, riding a winged lizard-like creature, shouts to their underlings:

Find it! This is where it told us to come to. We missed it last time, but no more! I don't care what we have to do, we're getting our hands on that thing!

As it so happens, you are not the only crew in search of that elusive orb; the Bouldersnakes have been tracking down the whereabouts of this mysterious and all-powerful object themselves, burning through towns – quite literally – to get it. News that Scorpion’s Bend has seen a resurgence of life and might still be the resting place of the orb has the bandits seeking out the town again. Their first round through Scorpion's Bend about a year ago had them coming up empty-handed (save for a few bits and baubles), but this time they are determined to find what they've come here to find. Though if there’s anything left here to salvage... they’ll ransack as they please.

Whether you confront them head-on or they catch you in hiding, they won’t easily back down from a fight. It will be best to keep your distance if you can manage it, and hope that they’ll pass you by. But the Bouldersnakes have their weaknesses too: once maimed, they still bleed, and none of them are immortal, though they are notoriously difficult to kill based on their talents alone... and when they carry weapons, too, well — those not accustomed to battles may find it best to hide. And even for those with fighting experience under your belt, teaming up with your fellow Orbers and combining your shared skills will be your best chance at survival.

5.0   By the time the suns have disappeared and the moons have risen, the Bouldersnakes invasion will make the bandit attack from the other night seem like a childish tussle. The Bouldersnakes don’t play nice and have adapted to the harsh lands as ruthless survivors. They arrive like a wave, many equipped with weapons: guns, sabers, pistols and small knives. A few others have engineered their own specially crafted weapons made of metal and magic (in the shape of guns, blow-torches, and blades) that wield a special element harnessed from mined ore called ‘pulsefire’. It is this pulsefire, glowing a deep blue (like the hottest colour of flame), that has the capability to destroy all living beings and allows the bandits to systematically ravage unsuspecting towns down to ash, reap its benefits (either for the town’s riches and wealth, or and especially: for any supply of ore), and then leave without a trace.

The best way to fight against pulsefire is to acquire weapons of pulsefire of your own and best a Bouldersnake before they best you. (Think high stakes, noon-time duels of the pistol.) Of course, this is a very risky and very dangerous affair as one shot by pulsefire could mean your untimely demise and the element itself isn't easy to put out either, so it might be best to work in teams to strategically disarm and swipe a pulsefire weapon to use before they manage to overwhelm you.

NOTE:   If your character is alive, your character will be vulnerable to the effects of pulsefire. Unliving things such as buildings and infrastructure will not be affected. Pulsefire has a slow spread-rate over unliving things, but its effects on the living are instant. Once in contact with the element, pulsefire quickly consumes the living body and spirit until it is turned to ash. Putting pulsefire out over unliving things is relatively easy, but once pulsefire has touched the living, there's little to no chance of making it out in one piece.

All through this, you must still remember your goal — it is not to stay in Scorpion's Bend, or even fight the Bouldersnakes, but to find the orb... and that means finding Welford Branson. How will you convince him to give you the orb, when all signs point to him not even knowing what it is, or what it has done? That is what you must decide... if you survive the Bouldersnakes in one piece, of course.

[ Finn's seen Rey fight and practice many times with Luke's blue lightsaber, and something about this brings him back to a time of... comfort? Or familiarity, perhaps. Either way, he's not unaccustomed to the way Luke fights, but it is very different from Rey. She's fierce, a power like a hurricane. Luke is... softer, more precise in his actions. It's interesting, and Finn kinda just wants to sit here and watch.

It's not an option right now, though, no matter how cool that jump and roll was. Maybe he can stare later if they make it out of this. ]

I'm alive.

[ He's not hurt but he's not okay either. Everyone's separated, a lot of them are injured, and Finn can't protect everyone at once. Plus, he's starting to get pretty exhausted. Over a week of surviving mostly on the Force coupled with this already-over-an-hour-long attack, not to mention he was barely able to sleep the night before.

But it's fine. He's here. What's not here is- He slides to a stop in what looks to be a kitchen. ]

There's no back door. Window-!

[ No sooner than he says it, one of them shatters, a bandit jumping in. This, uh- They're in a pretty tight spot. Is there even time to turn around to find another exit? ]

[ naturally, luke eventually picks his way over to dean, dropping down to sit beside him. he tucks himself into the other man's side, ignoring the offered blanket for a moment as he gets comfortable. then he slings one side of the blanket around dean, and pulls the other side around himself, curling his arm around the back of the other man's waist. ]

You look like you're on autopilot, [ he admits to him in a voice only meant for dean, squeezing him once gently. ] Credit for your thoughts?

[ honestly, where would any of them even start? but more and more often, dean's kind of luke's priority for comfort and reassurance-- both offering it, and receiving it from being near him. and knowing what he knows about the older man, well.. ]

Most likely. That house was a dirty, crumbling mess so there wasn't much I could do.

[ He scowls a little when he says that, recalling, as he otherwise lets his face be turned to Blue without any further fuss. Actually getting to sit, relax a little, letting Blue tend to him since he's sure letting him do something good for him else helps right now, feeling his fingers on his face despite how cold they are, it gets Yzak to untense some, grateful for that much. He tips his head toward him when he brushes his bangs away to make the process easier. ]

[ Yzak was a bit busy in the immediate moments after the illusion around them shattered - coming face to face with a couple of rock dragons that he managed to get away from, but not without a nice memento from them in the form of a bandage draped over the left side of his face for the remainder of ths mission. However, he did hear Sabriel's initial message on the network about the dead, how she sounded...

So now that he's back on his feet properly and refocused on getting things done, he comes to find her and offer to do said skinning and gutting. Teamwork. ]

( The whales truly are majestic creatures, shedding sand like a shimmering wave as they surface. It's quite soothing to watch them, in fact, observing the pod's slow, graceful dance among the dunes.

Just, y'know. From a distance.

Shielding his eyes from the suns, Leonard looks at her like she's crazy. )

[ When the Bouldersnakes arrive, they bring with them a whole lot of noise. It's loud and chaotic and pulls Orbers like Shang-chi out from his lethargy, gets him back on his feet. He should have expected it, too — that when the Orb finally broke the illusion in Scorpion's Bend, it would open the town up to vulnerabilities they couldn't imagine. And the Bouldersnakes are tough; they test his training to its limits, gives him a firsthand look at what pulsefire is capable of too. His priority now is to keep himself alive, and to keep the bandits away from the Orber crew — to buy them enough time to find the orb and get out of here.

Some time later, with the fight in full-swing, he's got his father's (his now, he supposes) ten rings equipped over his wrists. It's with a natural rhythm and flow that he pushes his power at the unsuspecting bandits, caught up within the battle to hold them off and disarm them of their weapons.

He's just landing on his feet when he practically feels the blade cutting through the air, aimed for his head. It's Itachi's warning that helps him move to deflect it with one arm, the knife pinging off of his rings and ricocheting into the air somewhere.

With the immediate danger of being stabbed over, he glances in Itachi's direction and nods. ]

[ The arrival of the Bouldersnakes comes as something of a surprise, but one that he'd still expected. With the illusion of Scorpion's Bend now dissolved into ash and debris, and the orb missing, it only stood to reason that the town might now be more vulnerable to attack. At least that's the way Shang-chi's seen it; with the town caught up in its own protective bubble, people literally looping around if they try to step outside of its borders, it felt like they'd managed to remain hidden in plain sight.

And now they're left to defend the scraps of the town they'd been left with until they can find the orb.

Shang-chi takes part in defending the town from the Bouldersnakes, throws himself right into the violence because he knows that's where he'll be most useful. He doesn't have the skill of a medic (though he's got rudimentary knowledge of cleaning up a wound and patching up a cut), and the only 'magic' he has is in his weaponry, so he puts himself into the fight.

At one point during the commotion, between the bullets and the clanging of swords and sabers and knives, Kovacs will find the weight of his assailant attached to his back quite suddenly lifted, almost in an instant, as a golden glow of rotating rings whizzes past his shoulders. The force of them is stronger than any Bouldersnake, and it's a good thing too because they just seem to keep coming.

With Kovacs in the clear, the rings are launched back to their owner like a magnetic force, pulled over Shang-chi's wrists where they belong. The golden glow dims a little now that they're 'home' and Shang-chi nods in his direction. ]

Yeah, I'm good, I'm good —

[ Being overwhelmed and ganged up on by one-too-many Bouldersnakes is certainly testing every skill in combat he'd been training for since he was a child. It doesn't help that he's been going for a much less murderous approach than he'd been taught to; something about the things he'd seen and the conversations he'd had in Kilnan has made it far more difficult to take a life than it used to be.

(Yeah, Xialing would likely find it hilarious. He's gone softer than soft.)

Still, he's relieved to get a little back-up, and is about to say so to add to his earlier response, when everything seems to happen at once: he sees the bandit reaching for their gun, he sees the weapon aimed in his direction, and he sees Daisy stepping in and — ]

Whoa — okay.

[ The gun, little more than parts now, fall apart in the bandit's hand, landing in a heap at his feet. And before he can pull any other tricks, Shang-chi folds his right hand into a fist and five rings slide off of his arm in a flurry of glowing gold to smack the guy down, knocking him out cold.

he is doing very little of the fighting himself. he's summoned a clone made of crows, and the clone is out battling the bandits as necessary. occasionally, he uses genjutsu on those susceptible to it — should he be paying attention, the doctor may bear witness to bandits either slumping over entirely catatonic, or turning on their enemies.

he has not, for what it's worth, killed anyone. nor does he seem likely to. even the knives he throws are meant to disable rather than inflict fatal damage.

however, he is being pushed back.

the clone takes critical damage, which causes it to burst into crows. it buys them a few moment's grace as the crows scatter and disorient their enemies, but —

Doctor, I don't mean to alarm you — but you may wish to work faster.

he makes a one-handed seal, and this time the clone is water-based. however, defending the doctor is not sustainable in their current location. the moment they are surrounded, the fight will become markedly more difficult to navigate.

[The desolate town erupts in to chaos as soon as the bandits - Bouldersnakes, as they call themselves - roar in to town, guns blazing and knives out. The screams of pain and the plumes of dust flying through the air as the Darkling strides down the remnants of the main street, the buildings falling apart around them all.

The magic lent by the orb, to preserve this town in pristine condition, and it didn't fade, it didn't slither away so much as vanish in in the blink of an eye. He doesn't notice it, keeps his eyes on the laughing, jeering men (were they? It was hard to tell with a few of them, too many arms and faces that seemed to fold in on themselves), his hands out and he steps up next to Daisy just as she grabs him, following her pull until he's behind her - watching.

The invisible shield that seems to string up from her hands, the way the pulsefire flows like liquid flame, blueish and deadly towards them only to fan out around a portion of the air, dispatching harmlessly around them.

He claps his hands together and thunder rolls across the dark, cloudless sky as the shadows gather between his palms, a blade of vicious darkness - it flies for the nearest bandit, slicing in to his chest with a sickening crunch.]

[ It has been nothing but chaos since the Bouldersnakes rolled in. Which isn't surprising necessarily, but it's still caught them off-guard as a group, when they've been more focused on their own survival than anything else. Jim can't speak for everyone, but he at least has been tired every day, worn thin by pushing himself to the limit, and in the midst of the mess, it's not as easy to think clearly, or move as quickly as he otherwise might.

He tries his best to trust his own reflexes, his own judgment, but he hates that none of it feels reliable right now. To add to everything, there's also the unsettling panic of not knowing where Bones is when they come rolling in, and the ensuing chaos makes it all the harder for Jim to find him.

He still scours the town, helping when he can, finding cover when he has to. It feels like an eternity passes before he finally finds Bones, though he can't help a shuddered breath of intense relief when he does, seeing him come to a halt just ahead of him.

Foolishly, Jim thinks it's because he's noticed him too. ]

Bones—

[ His calling out is cut short when suddenly a Bouldersnake comes rolling in right in front of Bones. Out of nowhere it feels like, Jim's eyes widening, everything happening too fast for him to even think about lifting his own phaser. He hears the shot, sees it all happen, the blood that immediately stains Bones's clothes. And he yells. ]

Bones!

[ He doesn't care for the danger, doesn't care that he might get shot himself, just rushing off in a panic to catch Bones before he really hits the ground, ditching his phaser to press a hand over the wound. It's bad. Blood still pours from between his fingertips, making him feel like Leonard's very life is just slipping beyond his grasp. ]

He sounds muffled, far-away— Lord, that thing was loud Leonard thinks stupidly through his relief, disconnected from the almost clinical awareness of the thudding ache in his back and under their hands, the heavy warmth of his own blood.

Behind the both of them, the Bouldersnake swears to find his pistol empty, and grabs for the other gun on his belt, clunky and hefty and full of pulsefire rounds. )

maybe he's a little too careful with this work, but bodily injury has always been extra traumatic for Mu bodies; that kind of thing sticks with you, even when tending to a hardy Coordinator.

when the work is done, Blue combs Yzak's bangs back in place, smooths out the bandage, sweeps stray dust from his cheek...anything to be able to keep his hands on him for a little longer. it can't last forever, though, so more's the reason to savor.]

while burying his head into Finn's shoulder:]

[even with that assurance, there's a little pulse of worry - worry for Yzak's sake, who went out to check on others less secure in their surroundings.

Blue withdraws only enough to look up at Finn, to unwind his arms and put his hands on Finn's face, as much a tender gesture as it is a searching one. he looks so worn...it makes Blue's chest ache with concern.]

[ somewhere between the first gunshot through the window and the subsequent shouting that followed, marta realizes that the initial plan of staying inside away from trouble has one glaring flaw: the trouble doesn't seem to respect being told to stay outside.

she's fairly proud of how quickly she switches gears, but admittedly the pride doesn't last for very long when her first step outside is immediately met with more hollering, the kind that implies her fear and scurrying is the exact type of response the bandits had been looking for and somehow that is the worst part of all this.

there's so many of them too. she swerves, she ducks, she tries to hide behind as many structures as she can get to but everywhere she turns there's always one of them, waving around a weapon of some kind, weapons that marta is very much devoid of (not that she'd know what to do with one anyway) and somehow she doubts the right hook ace had taught her would do her much good in this instance (especially because she still can't manage to do it properly enough not to hurt herself in the process).

but, what else is there to do but to keep running? her first hiding place compromised (probably torn down from the sounds of it) marta makes a mad dash to duck behind a wagon — only to nearly come colliding into another body. fortunately, a friendly one. ]

[It's hard to keep track of where everyone is, the comms filled with panicked calls for help as Daisy makes her way through the fight. She's learned pretty quickly that the bandits not only have special abilities, but some are also carrying weapons that shoot out pulsefire.

Daisy doesn't even see who the bandit in front of her is aiming at as she rushes towards them, using her power to send them flying sideways away from--]

Shit.

[Clara.

Sliding down beside her, the first thing she notices is all of the blood coming from her head. She knows head wounds bleed a lot, but that doesn't make her any less concerned.]

Come on, we need to get you out of here.

[And go where? Daisy has absolutely no idea. She does her best to help Clara up, her free hand shooting out in front of her to break the hand of one of the bandits who tries to point their weapon at the two of them.]

Can you walk?

i just wanted to check in and see if rhys would be able to mist some of the bouldersnakes! 🥳 i'm gonna copy & past what i wrote in my app for easy access
misting — another, but rarer talent for High Lords. with a snap of his fingers he can turn creatures and objects into mist, effectively killing them/dissolving them to nothing. it takes a lot of energy for him to do it, so it’s not something he can maintain for huge groups/for a length of time.

[ truthfully? marta does think about it. it would be so much easier to say that she didn't, to lean hard on an impulse, but the truth of the matter is there had been time: a quick second where marta had rushed past the trembling body only to double-back, look the bandit in the eye, and fall to her knees to begin applying pressure to the gunshot would on his side.

maybe it's because his blood was red like she's familiar with. maybe it's because all the running around trying to avoid getting hurt herself has made her too frazzled. maybe it's that brief second where their eyes met, and though his were cold and reptilian, they stared at her like they were begging her not to leave him, where so many of his own already had. ]

It's okay, [ she tells him and the bandit hisses, whimpers, scaled tail thrashing in the sand, ] you'll be alright.

[ the bullet she digs out, having to find the bandit's own hands away — his claws too large to wiggle in, ease it out, and now it lays fallen forgotten by her side while she works on making sure the pool of blood they're both sitting in doesn't grow—

and that's when it happens: the feel of cold, blunt metal against her head, the sound of a revolver clicking into place. marta's hands still, then lift, and she watches with growing dismay as the reptilian bouldernake's side slowly but surely begins to stitch itself back together again. her stomach drops as a low voice snarls overhead:

"Looks like we got a soft one here, Elias. Why don't you thank the lil' lady so she can feel real stupid right 'fore she dies?" ]
