Yeah. In Amestris, alchemy is used a lot with the military. Us State Alchemists are basically like their human weapons. Xing on the other hand with their alkahestry is more medical based, apparently. Depending on how you use it. Alchemy's pretty versatile. I've used it a lot in fighting or in fixing stuff that broke or such.
